Space and Missile Systems Center
Wins Packard Award
The U.S. Air Force’s Space and Missile
Systems Center Launch Enterprise team has
won the 2019 David Packard Excellence
in Acquisition Award. The Packard Award
recognizes Department of Defense organizations
for innovation and best acquisition
practices. SMC’s Launch Enterprise team
crafted an acquisition strategy of innovative
public-private investments in launch vehicle
development, resulting in the continuous
delivery of acquisition performance with
both affordability and speed.
“On behalf of the professionals of the
Launch Enterprise, we’re honored to receive
this award,” said Col Rob Bongiovi, director
of the Launch Enterprise. “This is an
incredibly dynamic time in Space Launch.
The Launch Enterprise has implemented a
strategy that uses non-traditional acquisition
authorities to leverage the strong U.S. launch
industry in order to provide the nation and
its warfighters the launch capability needed
to dominate the space domain today and
into the future. We’re proud to be a part of
this important mission, and I’m consistently
humbled by the success of this team.”
Previously, SMC’s Enhanced Polar System
team won the award in 2018. It is DOD’s
highest acquisition team award, which was
first awarded in 1997 in honor of former
Deputy Secretary of Defense and Hewlett-
Packard co-founder David Packard.
The award will be presented to the team
during a special ceremony in Washington,
D.C. on Dec. 2.

El Camino College to Celebrate the
Dedication of Featherstone Field
The field at El Camino College’s Murdock
Stadium will be officially named “Featherstone
Field” during a celebration before the Warriors’
homecoming football game. This special
event will honor Coach John Featherstone’s
more than 30 years of dedicated service to
El Camino College. Players from the teams
of the ‘70s and ‘80s will also be recognized,
including members of his 1987 team that won
the national championship. The event is set
for Friday, Nov. 16 with the field dedication
at 12:30 p.m. Game kickoff is at 1 p.m.
Featherstone retired in 2015 after 31 seasons
with the highest winning percentage among
active coaches who had coached for at least
15 years in the Southern Section of California,
which includes 37 community colleges from
Bakersfield to San Diego. His resume includes a
national championship in 1987, a state championship
in 2006, 11 conference championships,
and 19 bowl game appearances. Featherstone
led his teams to 21 nationally ranked finishes,
including seven straight from 2003-09.
Featherstone, an eight-time California
State Coach of the Year Award recipient,
was inducted into the ECC Athletic Hall of
Fame in 2005 as a player and in 2018 as a
coach. He is a 2017 California Community
Colleges Football Coaches Association Hall
of Fame inductee.

El Segundo Library Comes
Alive with Visiting Authors
Telling their Stories
Photos and article provided
by Linda Cohen
The ES Public Library hosted its 20th
annual El Segundo Author Fair on Saturday,
Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees
enjoyed a festive, educational event including
balloons, refreshments, panel discussions,
speakers, book signings, children’s programs
and live music.
Authors of Romance novels were on the
first panel and revealed their secrets and
patterns of writing successful books and
the many different thought processes they
would engage. Linda Johnston has written 52
Romance novels for her publisher Harlequin
books. Authors on the panel all agreed that
the essential element that each Romance
novel has to have is a happy ending.
Vicki Crum, Gwen Hernandez, Stacy Wise,
Linda Johnston and Carol Ericson, local successful
authors, shared that although some
think that writing is a cold and lonely job it
is quite the opposite since they get to spend
their days with the characters in their heads.
