Grades of Green
New Leadership Announced
Allie Bussjaeger Emily Gee
The El Segundo-based environmental nonprofit
Grades of Green has appointed Allie
Bussjaeger and Emily Gee as co-executive
directors of the organization, it was announced
this week. The two first began as interns at
Grades of Green more than seven years ago.
Over that time, they have presented dozens
of assemblies to schools in the area,
encouraged South Bay students to pass environmental
laws like plastic straw and styrofoam
bans, and have helped Grades of Green grow
to support over 500,000 students in over 21
countries in the quest to take action to take
care of the plant. The new leaders indicated
that they are excited to continue taking Grades
of Green to new heights while continuing
to honor the roots of this great community that
is the incubator of environmental change. In
addition to their hands-on experience, Allie
received her M.A. in Non-Profit Management
and a Fundraising Certificate and Emily holds
an M.A. in Strategic Public Relations and a
Business Certificate.

Protest Proposition 218
The city council along with the Mayor has
touted that El Segundo has a onetime surplus
in the millions of dollars. This is the first
time in a decade there has been a surplus. I
believe this statement is true, judging by the
spending spree taking place. (source: Herald
8/9/2018 and 9/13/2018)
The hiring of six-figure employees, thousands
to hundreds of thousands in consultation
fees, why even a couple of million to try and
pay the unsustainable Cal-PERS pensions.
So what’s in it for the people of El Segundo?
Why they are rewarded with a never before
fee for trash service? Funny, I thought our
council members were voted in to represent
the will of the people. Appears I’m mistaken.
This trash measure has already passed and
is set to go into effect along with all automatic
increases for years, remember the water rate
increases and increases and increases, unless
the people return the protest trash ballot sent
to them. I love the timing of these ballots,
they will start arriving around the same time
that we will be buried with the election junk
mail for the November election.
Let’s put an end to this presumption that
the council knows what’s best for the lowly
citizens of El Segundo. Remember, the city
council is counting on you to be asleep.
Look for these ballots and when you receive
it send it in.

Isn’t Pleased About Taxes
Isn’t it bad enough that El Segundo residents
have to pay the city more money for
filthy, dirty, stinky sewer water then pure
clean drinking water. Now, the avaricious
and insatiable city - (tax) - council has the
gall, the temerity and the outright audacity
to egregiously request that the citizens of El
Segundo to pay a truly gargantuan diabolical
monthly trash tax.
The city council frivolously wasted thousands
and thousands of taxpayer dollars. Eg:
“consultants” $241,000 and $18,000 to fix a
“clerical error”. The city council had the tenacity
of boasting the city and a “hefty surplus”
of taxpayer money and yet it still wants more
trash tax money on top of filthy sewer tax.
Sewer and trash costs are paid for by
property tax - that’s why we property owners
pay property tax.
I’m convinced this sewer and trash tax is
just a suborning political slush fund for predacious
politicians to meddle in and squander
at the horrific expense of honest taxpayers.
It is truly double taxation.

Fire Safety Corner
Fire Prevention Week
By James Carver,
El Segundo Fire Department
Fire Prevention Week is here. October
7th through the 13th is Fire Prevention
Week. The theme this year is “Look. Listen.
Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere
™”. Home fires killed 2,735 people
in the United States in 2016, according to
the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA). Annual fire loss data from NFPA
has again shown that working smoke alarms
cut the risk of dying in reported home fires
in half; and in 2016, cooking is the leading
cause of home fires. Kitchens are not the
only areas a fire can happen in your house.
You need to be fire-safe. Some fire safety
practices include:
• If you leave the kitchen for even a short
period of time while you are frying, grilling
or broiling food, you should turn off the
stove. Wherever possible, do not leave the
kitchen when cooking.
• Use the back stove burners when children
are present.
• Install smoke alarms in every sleeping
room, outside each separate sleeping area,
and on every level of the home.
• Create a home fire escape plan with your
family and practice the plan twice a year, so
you and your family are more prepared and
will therefore be more likely to survive a fire.
• If you use candles, always make sure they
are out when leaving a room and keep candles
on a non-combustible (glass or metal) base.
• Don’t use extension cords as permanent
wiring. Use only approved surge suppressors
for appliances and home entertainment/
computer equipment.
Again this year, the El Segundo Fire Department
and El Segundo Rotary are sponsoring
the Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest.
Students from the third, fourth and fifth grades
participate by drawing a poster involving the
Fire Prevention Week theme. Poster contest
winners from each grade will be honored at
the Rotary luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 11 at
the El Segundo Masonic Temple. •
“Firefighters are some
of the most selfless public servants
you will ever encounter.”
