Comment on
Bill Dougherty’s Letter
While technically correct, I still take issue with
Bill Dougherty’s comment on my previous letter.
The understanding of First Amendment freedoms
is fragile and in jeopardy by increasingly
effective and sophisticated attacks. In many
communities, some people are determined to
impose their own narrow views on everyone
else, and censor what they do not agree with
or approve of.
The First Amendment exists to protect speech
and activities that aren’t supported by everyone—
if only those ideas, which were supported
by everyone were protected, it wouldn’t be
needed. Limiting free speech is un-American
and unacceptable. Everyone should care about
freedom of speech, without it all our rights
and liberties quickly disintegrate.
Censorship (by anyone) is an assault on the
freedoms of all of us. We must continue to fight
for the freedom to read and to see differing
viewpoints, and to think for ourselves, not
be told what to think. We should all be open
to honest debate and not call for businesses,
media outlets or even individuals to suppress
information or differing views.
Just as I would never try to limit their freedom,
I and people like me will never submit
to the limits that they demand. I vote to keep
America a free country.

Kiwanis Good Citizens Award:
Arend and Aiyana Verfaillie
Arend and Aiyana Verfaillie were at home
when they felt their apartment building
shake and heard a loud noise come from
outside. They both looked out a window
and observed that a commercial truck had
struck the corner of their building and was
now driving away. Aiyana called the police to
report what she had witnessed and provided
officers with a description of the suspect and
his truck, while Arend ran for his bicycle to
chase the vehicle. Once he got close, Arend
took a photo of the license plate with his
cell phone and provided it to police. Arend
and Aiyana Verfaillie’s quick action sets an
example for our community.

Kent Krumbach Gets a Promotion
Congratulations to Kent Krumbach, who
was recently promoted to the rank of Sergeant
with the Torrance Police Department.
Kent is the eldest son of retired El Segundo
Police Lieutenant Walt Krumbach, who was
tragically killed in a motorcycle accident
in 2014. Retired Captain Bob Turnbull as
well as Lieutenants Raymond Garcia, Carlos
Mendoza and Jeff Leyman attended Kent’s
promotion ceremony to recognize his achievement
and to share in this prideful day on his
father’s behalf.
