HAPPY HOUR

Historic Moment for ESGS
El Segundo Girls Softball 10U had an epic
day qualifying for the state tournament in the
elite “B” Division that runs July 6-8 in Lancaster.
It is the first time an ESGS 10U team
has advanced to the state tournament.
The 10u team proved its mettle against some
talented South Bay teams. Coming off a 17-0
victory over Beach Gold Friday night, the girls
squared off against perennial powerhouse Torrance
Gold (the10U national finalist in 2017).
They battled for seven innings and with the
score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh
inning, El Segundo scored on a walk-off play
at the plate for a 3-2 win.
Next up for the 10u Gundo Girls was La
Mirada Gold. Facing the defending district

champs and a team that had only lost two games
this season was no easy task, but El Segundo
demonstrated that it belonged. With another
incredible defensive effort plus timely hitting
and base-running, El Segundo took a 3-1 lead
heading into the seventh inning. Leading 3-2
with one out and the bases loaded, El Segundo
made a pitching change and brought the infield
in to face La Mirada’s two best hitters. After
a force out at the plate, La Mirada’s cleanup
hitter smashed a ball off the pitcher’s glove.
The ball caromed to the shortstop, who quickly
scooped it up and fired to first for the final out.
Championship Sunday brought out the crowds
to watch these battle-tested young athletes. First
up was Downey Gold. El Segundo came out
with an early lead and never looked back in
posting an impressive 6-1 win and advancing
into the finals of the winners’ bracket.
In the first elimination game, El Segundo
scored once in the top of the first inning. Torrance
countered with three runs when it took
advantage of two El Segundo errors and led
3-1. El Segundo tied the game in the top of
the fifth, but missed on an opportunity to blow
the game open when it left the bases loaded.
Torrance seized the opportunity in the bottom of
the fifth by scoring two runs and then holding
on for a 5-3 win. In the championship game,
Torrance took advantage of costly El Segundo
errors and great hitting to jump to out a 6-0
first inning lead. El Segundo never threatened
and were shut out 8-0
Next up for this 10u girls team is another
tournament this weekend in Escondido followed
by the state tournament in Lancaster. •
