Melissa McCollum Hired
as New Library Director
The City of El Segundo has selected
Melissa McCollum as its new library director.
She will oversee all operations in the Library
Services Department as well as the four
branch libraries located on school campuses.
She will be responsible for continuing the
community’s high-level of service, growing
library programming and outreach, and
providing an important perspective on the
City’s executive team. McCollum replaces
former Library Director Debra Brighton who
retired last year.
McCollum brings a strong background in
community relations, library management and
development of innovative library programming.
She stated, “I look forward to working
with City of El Segundo and El Segundo Unified
School District officials, staff, residents
and partners to provide comfortable, safe
and welcoming public and school libraries,
link people of all ages to information, experiences,
and ideas to help them learn and
be successful, connect with the community
through outreach and collaboration, embrace
new concepts and technology, and be a good
steward of public dollars and resources. We
want the El Segundo Public Library to continue
to be a civic and cultural hub.”
McCollum has worked in libraries for
over 20 years, including 11 in management
with the LA County Library. She
served as community library manager at
the Manhattan Beach, West Hollywood and
Lawndale libraries. Known for developing
new programming and obtaining grants for
library projects promoting community health,
she implemented Instant Recess, a library
garden, art exhibits, Age Friendly library
policies, and more. She won the American
Library Association’s prestigious I Love My
Librarian Award in 2010. McCollum earned
a Master of Science in Information from the
University of Michigan and a Bachelor of
Arts from Dartmouth College. Originally
from Des Moines, Iowa, she has lived in
Manhattan Beach since 1999.

El Segundo High School Principal
Dr. Jennifer Tedford saw a need, realizing
that there are some low-income seniors on
campus unable to afford the costs of applying
to colleges and taking state tests. She
partnered with the El Segundo Kiwanis
Club and the end result was a $5,000 check
presentation during last week’s El Segundo
School Board meeting.
