Special Event Requests Dominate
El Segundo City Council Meeting
By Brian Simon
In the first full El Segundo City Council
meeting for new members Scot Nicol and
Chris Pimentel and with Drew Boyles as
mayor, special events and beer soaked up
most of the agenda. Huck Street Productions
received approval to stage a Craft Beer and
Music Festival at The Lakes golf course and
driving range in late August or early September.
event will draw up to 30 teams from around
the region and will feature a 3-mile running
course on the driving range. The Lakes will
be able to reopen to the general public by 2
p.m. that afternoon. However, the clubhouse
restaurant may provide concessions during
the program and keep all the proceeds. Cross Friday

ESUSD Town Hall: Long-Range
Facilities Master Plan and Bond
By Duane Plank
El Segundo Unified School District (ESUSD)
last Thursday hosted the first of two
town hall meetings slated to give interested
members of the public a chance to input
their thoughts regarding the details of the
10-year-facilities master plan (LRFMP)
developed in 2016. The District and El
Segundo School Board are considering
placing a bond measure on the November
ballot to help fund perceived necessary
upgrades. The current contemplated ask for
the bond on the table is $92 million. The
timeline has the School Board reviewing
the final draft of the LFRMP at its June
12 meeting, with a final vote on the bond
ask on June 26.
In the past two months, District personnel
have met at school sites to study the
existing master plan, going “line by line”
to review proposed projects through the
lens of current facility needs. With the
escalation of construction costs in the past
two years, it was ascertained, said District
Superintendent Dr. Melissa Moore, that “our
dollars will not have the same purchasing
power” in the future. The scope of some of
the projects proposed in the 2016 LRFMP
was scaled back, with new line items added
that stressed, among other needs, increased
school site security.

The promoters (including The Tavern on
Main owner Kristian Krieger) hope to draw
at least 4,000 attendees for the event, which
will feature 25-30 beer and wine purveyors,
five food vendors, merchandise booths, five
live bands and an upstairs VIP area.
The festival, the first of its kind at The
Lakes, will require closing the facility from
at least noon onward on the chosen Saturday
– with the festival running from 2 to 7
p.m. The Council set a minimum permit fee
of $12,500 to cover loss of revenues from
the golf course and driving range as well as
City staff time. Though he voted to approve
the request, Nicol expressed concern that the
applicants didn’t provide enough information
on transportation (possible shuttles from either
a Chevron parking lot across the street
or from a Raytheon lot on the same side of
Sepulveda) and particulars on which nonprofit
groups will receive some percentage of
proceeds. Because the El Segundo Education
Foundation will likely benefit, Mayor Pro Tem
Carol Pirsztuk – also CEO of Ed! – recused
herself from the vote. Staff will return to the
Council next month with more details on the
items in question.
All five Council members gave their thumbs
up to a request to hold the El Segundo High
School Cross Country Invitational at The
Lakes on the morning of September 8. The
