structurally balanced budget. “We are off
to a strong start, but the task will only get
more difficult,” he warned. “Our ability to
support a balanced and responsible budget
requires a long-term view that can have difficult
short-term choices.”
Identifying the potential obstacles ahead,
Pimentel said it was paramount for the City
to structure itself to “grow wisely in our
commercial zones, be creative in providing
ways for our young people to stay here and
new, young families to join us, and aggressively
defend our interests.” With that in
mind, Pimentel pledged that any items he
places on the agenda for the next quarter will
focus on “updating our regulatory regime and
maintaining our stature as the most attractive
place in the region to do business.”
Mayor Pro Tem Carol Pirsztuk’s top
wish for 2019 is for the City to continue to
optimize its commercially zoned land east
of PCH, which provides over 90 percent of
general fund revenues. “The residents of the
city reap the benefits of the commercially
zoned land and it is my hope to continue
to attract new companies in fields such as
biomedical science and entertainment in El
Segundo,” she said.
The two biggest challenges facing the City
this year, in Pirsztuk’s estimation, are finding
a new city manager and paying down the
looming future pension debt. “We are looking
for a candidate who will ‘fit’ El Segundo and
understands both the residential and commercial
aspects of the city,” she said of the search to
replace Carpenter that will kick off this month.
“Once on board, the city manager will continue
to implement the approved strategic plan and
ensure that all of the budgeted initiatives are
completed successfully.”
On the matter of pension debt, Pirsztuk
sees one of the new city manager’s roles as
identifying alternative revenue opportunities
and reducing expenditures. “The City has
a bright future as long as we continue to
be fiscally aware and stay aligned with our
strategic goals,” she said.
One item Pirsztuk said she will personally
prioritize is continued discussion with Los
Angeles World Airports to ensure El Segundo
has a voice in the expansion process
and how it impacts the local community. “I
will also work to ensure that we are fairly
compensated for any disruption during construction,”
she said.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues,
Boyles added, “The City Council and I are
looking forward to another incredible year
in El Segundo. Thank you to all of you for
making this town so special.” •
