A Happier Life Starts with Good Neighbors
A great time was had at the Holly Glen community picnic this past Saturday. It’s nice to know that our wonderful community strives to bring neighbors together. Photo courtesy Hawthorne Police Department.

Weddings,
Aero planes and Life
The Huber/Yates family flew
up to Portland, Oregon this past
weekend to attend our nephew’s
wedding. We got up early to
get to Sacramento’s fine airport
only to find out that our flight had been
delayed for two hours. No problem, I found
some coffee and read a few chapters of
“A Life Well Played”, written by the late,
great, golfer Arnold Palmer. We arrived
safely in the City of Roses and hopped on a
shuttle to the Budget rental car lot. Navigating
the freeways in Portland is not all that
difficult and we made it downtown to eat
at our namesake restaurant, Huber’s. It’s
the oldest bar and restaurant in Portland,
having been established in 1879. We are not
related to the founding family, nonetheless,
the unique dinning hall and great food made
for a good outing. Someone at the wedding
made the comment that many families have
a tendency to only gather for weddings
and funerals. Weddings usually are a little
bit happier occasion than the latter. So, the
question is asked, who will be the next
family member to get married or kick the
bucket? Since I’m advanced in age,
naturally some of my extended
family/critics look my way. I tell
friend or foe to have a good time
at my funeral. I wouldn’t want
my departure to be anything but
a festive occasion, full of gayety
and cold ones. This weekend’s
wedding party had four kegs at the
reception for roughly 100 thirsty
souls. You know darn well that
when there is an “open bar” and the poor
bride’s father is picking up the tab, I’m
going to partake of not “a” cold one but
several. A Christian wedding is certainly
different than just your old, “justice of
peace”, say a few words, kiss the bride,
Elvis drive thru hookup gathering. Christians
believe that God brings a man and woman
together to be joined in the holy state of
matrimony. Christ is present as the couple
speak vows to “have and to hold, for better
or for worse til death do them part”. Wow!
Do you mean that I get to love my old lady
til I crock? She said “yes” to me, way back
in the day! She must not have known me
too well, but somehow, some way, she has
tolerated me all of these years. God says
“yes” to us every day. He not only tolerates
us, he forgives us and treats us as his
dear children.
