the District’s continuing partnership with the
Wiseburn Education Foundation (WEF), calling
it “an amazing organization” and lauding its
commitment to STEAM, which, he said, is a
“positive add to our district. We have a solid
momentum going forward with a similar vision.”
The other presentation on the agenda was to
bestow an $18,000-plus check to the District
from DMS, which the school was able to raise
while participating in the fundraiser Pennies for
Patients that benefits blood cancer research for
the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).
The funds raised were the most by any school
in Southern California, and a representative
of LLS was on hand to thank DMS and the
District for their efforts. Wilberg spearheaded
the quick presentation, saying “We are really
proud of our students.” Silvers added, “The
amount they raised this year was phenomenal.”
He called the experience “one of those times
that we can teach kids to give back. We are
proud of the kids, the teachers and the community
in general.”
Board member and administration reports
followed after WEF representative Rebecca
Hamburg gave a quick report about the fundraising
success of the recent Rock Around
the Block event, as well as newly endowed
scholarships.
Member Nelson Martinez called Thursday’s
meeting a “wonderful evening” for recognizing
the District employees. Vice President/
Clerk Roger Banuelos added his thanks for
the “amazing and wonderful things happening
in the district. Sometimes we don’t take the
time to recognize them.” He also gave kudos
to teachers, noting the strong showing that the
students had in the recent science/technologybased
Herndon competition, and congratulating
those who coordinated the Washington, D.C
student trip. He also mourned the loss of Scott.
“We lost a great person in the community,”
Banuelos said.
Kaneda spoke about the “splendid, rewarding
times” spent attending recent school site open
houses. “This is they payback that we get,”
she said. She also lauded the support given
to programs by the WEF.
Silvers lauded the scholarly accomplishments
of the students who participated in the
Herndon competition and the success of the
