Cruise Night at
Fosters Freeze
Calling all Hawthorne High School Alums.
June 22nd is the date set for another Cruise
Night at Fosters Freeze. All of the details can
be found somewhere on Facebook. The weather
should be a little nicer by then. So, make plans to
see your friends and old classmates on the Blvd.
50th Year Class Reunion
for HHS Class of ’69
All Hawthorne High School Alums are
invited to attend a very special celebration
this September 20-21st at the Ayres Hotel in
Hawthorne. It will be the 50th Class Reunion
for the HHS Class of 1969. I’m old enough
to remember back to the sixties. It was quite
the time. Catch all the details of the reunion
by going to several postings on Facebook. It
looks like it will be a great time to reunite
with old friends and classmates.
Grads, Dads and June Gloom
June can be a month full of emotions. The end
of the school year always brings about a happy
feeling. No more getting up early for parents
or kids. It can be sad also to say goodbye to a
good teacher who has given so much to make
a difference in the lives of kids who they may
never see again. Most graduation ceremonies
are long and boring. No one is listening to the
speeches, especially the graduates. The keynote
speaker has a tough time saying anything
meaningful that the graduates will remember or
even hear. Most graduates just want to get their
diplomas and go party. Then comes Fathers’ Day.
It sure aint Mothers’ Day, but that’s okay. Most
fathers just want to be thanked for being a great
dad and then be left alone to enjoy the day playing
golf or doing what they want to do. Of course
consuming a cold one or two is just fine also. The
key to be a great dad is keeping mother
happy. It seems like if mama’s happy
everyone is happy. Speaking for the
majority of men, we just want to be appreciated
for the work and effort we put
into making our family survive and thrive.
We don’t need gifts like ties, golf balls, or
coffee shop gift cards. We would rather
have our wife and children just say “thanks dad
for being there for us”. We just feel overlooked
sometimes, underappreciated sometimes. Mothers
get flowers, candies and buffets; dad gets
a big fat donut. Then finally comes the June
weather. I was down in Hawthorne this weekend
and had my light jacket on most of the weekend.
June gloom has set in. Life can seem gloomy
also. Life sometimes can seem overwhelming and
impossible and that can be good. What do you
mean Mr. Know-Nothing? What I’m saying
is that when we realize that we can’t live life
on our own will, our own strength, our own
desire, we realize we need help. My help
comes from the Lord, who made heaven and
earth. The more I fail, the more life becomes
impossible, the more I rely on God to live, the
easier life is. My faith, that God has given
to me, sets me free to live life without fear. I
live this life with God’s divine love guiding
me to serve others. So, even if you have failed
at being a good dad, even if you have failed
to pass your class, or even if not one of your
family members appreciates you, God loves you.
Through failure we find hope. Let’s all admit
that we are all a bunch of lousy, no good for
nothing, losers and let God love us. Then it
will really be time to party. Have a cold one!
