Fire Safety Corner
Change Your Clock,
Change Your Batteries
By James Carver,
El Segundo Fire Department
Communities nationwide witness tragic home
fire deaths each year. In 2017, a person died
an average of every 3 hours in home fires
-- and in 2015, the most current year data is
available, 59 percent of those deaths occurred
in homes with no smoke alarms or without
working smoke alarms. Non-working smoke
alarms rob you of the protective benefits that
they were designed to provide. The most commonly
cited cause of smoke alarm failure is
dead or missing batteries.
As the fall time change approaches on Sunday,
Nov. 4, the El Segundo Fire Department wants
to remind everyone to make another change
that could save your life. The Fire Department
encourages everyone to change the batteries
in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide
detectors every year during the fall time change.
As of July 1, 2015, all new battery-operated
smoke alarms sold in California had to have
a 10-year non-replaceable battery. However,
there are existing smoke alarms that use a
9-volt battery that should be replaced each
year. Changing smoke alarm batteries at
least once a year is one of the simplest, most
effective ways to reduce these tragic deaths
and injuries.
Additionally, the El Segundo Fire Department
recommends checking your smoke alarms
every month and replacing your smoke alarms
every 10 years. Studies have shown that residential
smoke alarms lose their effectiveness
in 10 years.
The Fire Department also recommends that
you use that extra hour saved from the time
change to make and practice a home escape
plan; know the sounds of a smoke alarm and
a carbon monoxide detector, draw a map of
your house showing all doors and windows;
identify two ways out of each room; designate
a meeting place outside; and practice the fire
escape plan with the entire family. •
