game that had all the early signs of a powder
keg waiting to explode with all the mouthy,
chipping talk between the two teams. While El
Segundo was stretching and doing warm-ups
on its side of the 50-yard line, the Santa Monica
players -- devoid of their coaching staff -- displayed
some inappropriate behavior along and
played some questionable music. The Vikings’
antics caught the ire of the game officials, who
penalized Santa Monica to open the game.
The Vikings’ questionable behavior may
have cost them the game when it hadn’t even
started. The penalty on the kickoff coupled with
El Segundo’s defense pinned Santa Monica
deep inside its own 10-yard line. A bad snap
on fourth down resulted in a 2-point safety
for the Eagles.
The pregame Santa Monica antics only
served to motivate El Segundo even more. So
the Eagles extended their early 2-0 lead with
a drive that ended when Matt Romero found
Arman Sayson open on a swing pass. Sayson
ran over two defenders on his way to a 16-yard
touchdown and an 8-0 lead.
El Segundo’s defense came up stout again
when it stuffed a rushing attempt by Tyshaun
Walker for a 5-yard loss followed by Viking
quarterback Anthony Amou being sacked by
Alex Ron and James Amerault. The Eagles then
went on a 10-play drive that was hampered
by three penalties that resulted in a missed
37-yard field goal. On the drive to set up the
field goal attempt, Joey Gorte had a reception
for 24 yards and Sayson had one for 27 yards.
Consecutive penalties pushed the Eagles back
outside the 20-yard line.
El Segundo’s defense forced two consecutive
punts before Santa Monica got on the scoreboard.
Rodney Crayton had an 80-yard catch and run
pass in which he was caught from behind by

James Fraelich inside the El Segundo 8-yard
line. The Eagle defense kept the Vikings out
of the end zone on three plays that resulted in
two yards before Edgar Ruvalcaba connected
on a 24-yard field goal.
Before the first half ended, the Eagles had one
more possession. Three penalties and Romero
getting sacked helped stop the drive and the
first half ended with the Eagles on top 9-3. It
was a first half filled with emotions that were
just starting to bubble.
The Eagles’ offense stumbled to open the
second half. On their first possession Romero
was picked off by Santa Monica’s Bryce Smith,
who returned it 25 yards. Six plays later,
Raymun Smith caught a 10-yard touchdown
pass and with the missed extra point the game
was tied 9-9.
On El Segundo’s next possession, Romero
was once again intercepted near the Santa

Monica 15-yard line. El Segundo’s defense
held strong, highlighted by Amerault’s second
sack of the game. That tackle for loss helped
result in the Vikings punting back to the Eagles.
El Segundo had great field position near its
own 43-yard line. Romero guided his team on
a 10-play drive that would ultimately result
in a missed field goal attempt. Romero would
complete passes to Gorte for 12 yards, Sayson
for 9 yards and Scott Melton for 10 yards
that set up a potential rushing touchdown
by Romero. The touchdown was negated by
a major penalty by the Eagles, pushing the
ball back to the Viking 28-yard line. On third
and goal, Romero found Fraelich open for
a 23-yard gain. The field goal attempt was
blocked and the Vikings took over on their
own 20-yard line.
After El Segundo’s defense forced another
punt, Fraelich returned the ball 28 yards to
the Santa Monica 35-yard line. Dylan Phillips
caught a pass for 10 yards that set up an
8-yard quarterback keeper by Romero. On
the play, Romero laid motionless for a brief
time when he landed on his neck getting into
the end zone. He was helped off the field as
if nothing had happened, knowing he’d just
given his team a 16-9 lead with 9:25 remaining
in the game.
The Vikings went on 15-play drive helped
along by three El Segundo penalties. Santa
Monica had first and goal at the 1-yard line
and it took four plays to get into the end zone
to tie the game at 16-16.
With time running down in regulation,
the Eagles had one more opportunity to win
the game. Starting on his own 38-yard line,
Romero found Gorte for a 12-yard pickup,
Sayson for another 9 yards and Melton for a
10-yard gain. With 17 seconds remaining in the
fourth quarter, the Eagles’ 32-yard field goal
was blocked and the game went into overtime.
Each team would get the ball on their opponent’s
25-yard line. The Eagles had the first
possession and on third and 10, Melton picked
up 8 yards to make it fourth down with 2 yards
to go. On the play, Eagle guard Ben Villa
broke his tibia and that stopped the game for
15 minutes. After giving Villa gave the thumbs
up and a large ovation from the crowd, the
Eagles went for the first down. Dylan Phillips
hauled in a 15-yard pass and was stopped short
of the goal line. Romero then kept it to get
into the end zone for a 22-16 lead.
Santa Monica was assessed a penalty for an
illegal substitution. The El Segundo defense
stepped up and stopped the running game that
included Julian Rodriquez’s tackle of Samo
running back Zaire Martin-Thomas for a big
loss. On fourth and long, the final pass play
fell incomplete when the defense pressured
both the quarterback and the receivers.
It was a fitting end to the season and especially
to Coach Heck’s coaching career. Afterwards,
he addressed the team after being doused with
a full cooler of cold water amidst the winning
celebration. Fighting back some emotions,
Heck said, “I couldn’t be prouder of you guys
these past two weeks and especially tonight.
I’ll remember this one and I hope you do too.
For just the third time in the past 15 years,
the Eagles will not advance to the CIF Southern
Section football playoffs. But to win their last
game of the season in dramatic fashion, and
in overtime, is a memory that each player will
remember for reunions to come. On behalf of
a grateful football program, thank you, Coach
Heck. You’ll be missed…

Advances to CIF Playoffs
The Eagles finished second to Santa Monica
in the Ocean League and advanced to the
CIF Sothern Section playoffs for the seventh
consecutive season. The Eagles played host to
Bay League third place finisher Peninsula on
Tuesday. If the Eagles got past the Panthers,
they’ll host the Edison Chargers today at 5 p.m.
at the Mira Costa High School pool. •
