Police Briefs
Kiwanis Good Citizen
Award: Ryan Oliver
Ryan Oliver heard the sound of breaking
glass outside his apartment building.
Oliver looked outside and observed two
suspects breaking into St. Antony’s Pharmacy.
As the suspects fled the area with
stolen property from the business, Oliver
immediately called the El Segundo Police
Department and gave a detailed description
of the suspects and their direction of travel.
Based on the information Ryan Oliver provided,
El Segundo officers apprehended the
suspects a short distance away and arrested
them for burglary.

Expensive Lesson Learned When Someone
Forgot to “Move It, Or Lose It!”

ESPD reminds everyone that thieves often
target parked cars that have something that
looks valuable inside. The thief simply has
to smash the window, or open the door if
it’s unlocked, and then take the items. It only
takes seconds!
On Oct. 27 at about 9 a.m., a driver parked
their car in the 700 block of North Pacific
Coast Highway and went inside a restaurant
to get something to eat. The driver left several
bags/suitcases inside of the car that were
visible from the outside. Upon returning
to the car, the driver noticed someone had
smashed the window and took the bags from
inside. One of the bags contained $17,000 in
currency! This was a terrible situation and it
could have been prevented if the valuables
were taken out of the car and not left inside.
If you value your property, please do not
leave them in your unattended car. If items
must remain in your vehicle, place them out
of sight or in the trunk so a thief won’t be
tempted to steal them.

Lieutenant Ray Garcia a “Human Book”
ESPD Lieutenant Raymond Garcia was a
“human book” on Saturday, Oct. 27 as he,
and several other participants, were at the El
Segundo Library as part of a “Living Library.”
The event, hosted by the ESMoA and the El
Segundo Library, encouraged people to sit
down with “human books” for one-on-one
conversation to promote empathy and a better
understanding of people’s life experiences. The
Living Library collection included a refugee,
environmentalist, homeless advocate, police
officer, millennial, a teenager with Down’s
Syndrome, and more.

and exhalations, building to a symphony of
senses and an orchestration of evil. But it’s the
time in between these moments– a politically
uninteresting side story and a barely motivated
Dr. Josef Klemperer (look closer at “his” makeup
and re-look at Tilda Swinton’s credits in the
film) -- that had me wishing Suspiria would’ve
left me even more breathless.
Suspiria is an overall fascination for the
senses with its details and artful moments,
but it lacks some of the core ingredients
that make horror movies fun. It’s undeniably
expertly crafted, and when it goes off the rails
in the film’s head-spinning (or head-exploding)
ending, it’s quite simply one of the most bizarre
moments in movies this year. But even with
that, Suspiria is not as shocking as it could
be, making me think these ladies may not be
entirely satisfied.
152 min. Suspiria is rated R for disturbing content
involving ritualistic violence, bloody images,
and graphic nudity, and for some language includ-
ing sexual references. Now playing in theaters. •
Ryan Rojas.
the surface as he struggles to protect Lyla from
further humiliation. He is unsettled when his
anger doesn’t seem to be directed at Nina,
even though he finds fault with her and her
husband’s extravagant lifestyle.
The characters that Emily Giffin has created
could actually be living and breathing people.
They each are complicated and have different
motivations for the actions they take. The “Me
Too” movement, current social media topics
and national headlines of today hit home in
this novel. One minute the reader is sure of an
outcome only to be dissolved in a few more
pages. I recommend listening to the book on
CD. The actress who voices Nina is a hoot.
We look forward to helping you find what
you’re looking for at the library. •
