as well as others. In all, over 100 items
were donated. The list included a week’s
stay at a vacation destination; a Mongoose
bicycle; wine baskets; jewelry from The
Jewelry Source; gift certificates provided
by local merchants; plus tickets to a Lakers
game, Kings game or Angel game as well
as other great gifts. The two top sponsors
of the Cornhole Tournament were Jerome’s
Furniture and Bill Ruane. Other sponsors
included the Manhattan Beach Police Department’s
Police Officers Association and the
Los Angeles Lakers. Additional businesses
that contributed to the event’s success were
the El Segundo Brewing Company, Cold
Stone Creamery, Blimpie’s, and Britt’s BBQ.
With over 350 people gathered to support
Drake and his family, the attendees had the
run of the park with an inflatable bounce
house for the kids in full use and great food
being consumed on a picture-perfect weather
day. The Cornhole Tournament brought 66
teams together, including one with Lakers
head coach Luke Walton on one squad and
his assistant coach Clay Moser on another.
Both said they were humbled by meeting
Drake and the support El Segundo had
extended to the Walker family. They said
they were honored to be a part of the day
to support Drake.
The Cornhole community has its own language
to describe what goes on in a match.
General Cornhole terms are: Ace (a bag
that lands on the board for a single point),
Blocker (a bag sitting in front of the hole,
blocking a slider), Cornhole (a bag that lands
right in the hole for three points), Dirty Roll
Up ( a bag that hits the ground before rolling
up on to the board for a single point),
Shucker (when one player’s bag knocks his
opponents bag off the board), and Slider (a
bag that slides into the hole for three points).
Scoring is when a player gets one or
more of the four bags thrown into the hole
for three points. One point is awarded if the
bag lands on the playing surface providing
it isn’t touching the ground or another bag
that is touching the ground. The Cornhole
game continues until one team reaches 21
or more points.
As Drake watched the tournament, he
cheered on his father who was on Team
Drake. Team Drake worked their way
through their bracket to reach the elite eight
where they got by The Wood 21-9. The Tossers
got by Team Blondike 21-17 in the other
bracket to reach the final four. The Cheese
Heads overwhelmed Meat Sticks with a number
of cornholes to advance with a 21-8 win. In
one of the closest matches of the day, Team
Robinson needed some clutch cornholes by
Kelsey Robinson to help her team win 21-18.
In the semifinals, the sentimental favorite
to advance was Team Drake. They rushed to
a 14-6 lead before the Tossers tied the match
at 17-17 and then won it 21-20. The biggest
comeback came from Team Robinson when
they rallied from an 18-9 deficit to win it 21-
20. Prior to the final match, Drake tossed the
first pitch much to the delight of the crowd
and nearly got a Cornhole. In the final match,
it wasn’t close as The Tossers won easily
21-8 to capture the tournament championship.
It’s hard to put into words what the El
Segundo community coming together meant
for one precious boy and his family. Both
Leslie and Jim Walker were humbled by the
turnout and support for Drake.
Drake and his father Jim, a 1997 El Segundo
High graduate, are very close. Drake’s dream
is to be like his father and be a police officer.
So this past Tuesday, Drake was sworn in as
an Honorary Police Officer by the Torrance
Police Department’s Chief Eve Irvine at the
Torrance City Council meeting.
Let’s, as a community, get behind Drake
and his family and support them like we have
always done for our neighbor.•
