breed. So the most popular guess is that I
am a Border Terrier mix. One afternoon, I
ventured out on my own to try and expand my
social life and ended up losing my way home.
That’s how I ended up becoming a resident
of an LA County shelter as a stray. At first I
wasn’t too worried because I had an adopter
and, as a back-up, another interested party.
When both of them failed to appear, then I
became worried. Thankfully the MSFR folks
decided to rescue me – they said I was just too
cute to leave behind. In addition to a sweet,
expressive face with big dark eyes, I have a
very soft fur coat (which doesn’t shed much)
and a full, natural tail that wags constantly. I
get along great with other dogs and love to
play.” If you’re interested in Brady, please
email info@msfr.org for more information.
“Hi there! My name is Snickers and, if I
were to guess, I would say I was named that
because of my brown and brindle coloring.

“They call me Brady, which is of Scottish-
Gaelic origin meaning spirited and that I am.
I’m a 1-year-old, male Border Terrier mix
– well, that’s what we think I am. My face
looks a wee bit like a Mini Wheaten Terrier…
but at 11 pounds, I’m far too small for that
When I was found wandering the streets,
my owner was contacted but never returned
the calls or even tried to find me. I’m a
6-year-old, 28-pound, male Terrier mix who
would rather be a couch potato than play
with toys. However, I do enjoy a good walk
in the mornings and evenings. I’m a pretty
social guy who gets along well with other
dogs, cats and especially people. The lady
who cares for me thinks I’m pretty smart
because I am easily adjusting to crate-training
and housebreaking. Not quite there, but I’m
working on it! Since I am not the least bit
destructive, once I’m completely housebroken
I’ll be fine with total access to the house. To
top it off, I’m a great watchdog – I bark at
strangers when they come to the door and
so I’ll be able to keep you safe.” If you’re
interested in Snickers, please contact Deborah
at dlarvine@gmail.com. •
Deputy City Manager (formerly Economic
Development Manager) Barbara Voss walked
the Council through the rebuilt and recently
relaunched elsegundobusiness.com website
that now caters to today’s mobile users. Key
features include information on why businesses
should choose El Segundo, an overview of the
business community (including top employers,
Fortune 500 firms, aerospace companies,
a business directory, Downtown and Smoky
Hollow information, and testimonials), plus
available properties and developments in
different sectors of town with the ability
to request a tour. There’s also a section on
various business advantages, with additional
pages highlighting the Champions of Business
events and the work and members of EDAC.
The site also features “call to action” buttons
and videos.
Voss also unveiled a second website, destinationelsegundo.
com, meant to capitalize
on the City’s “Start Here” campaign to build
local tourism and hospitality. This site focuses
on hotels, shops, restaurants and things to
do – with a window available to “Explore El
Segundo.” Also included are distances from
major Southland attractions, a calendar of
events, Instagram feed and notable business
events/ribbon cuttings.
Speaking of Voss, the Council voted 4-1 to
approve her new Deputy City Manager title
along with her salary range and job classification.
Councilmember Don Brann voted
against the item that he pulled from the consent
agenda not because he had issue with pay or
duties, but due to concerns that the next City
Manager (the current one, Greg Carpenter, is
set to retire in nine months) may have different
ideas about the position or want to bring his
or her own person along. Carpenter explained
that the new position is a key component of
a citywide communication plan where Voss
will serve as point person.
In a second consent pull, the Council gave
its blessing for the El Segundo Fire Department
to be part of a joint powers authority for
a regional training group – but contingent on
the overall entity first securing insurance (as
recommended by City Attorney Mark Hensley).
If the quest for insurance runs into any
snafus, the item will go back to the Council
for further discussion.
With five Tuesdays in October, the next
El Segundo City Council meeting will take
place on Tuesday, Nov. 6 (also Election Day)
at 7 p.m. at City Hall. •
