I was very spoiled. My kids attended a
private preschool that was very, very secure.
When I passed by Center Street School, I
was shocked there wasn’t even a fence. It
was amazing that a parent could walk into
the school unquestioned. I am a little less
concerned about people coming in, as opposed
to people leaving. I think entryways need to
be more secure, which needs to be addressed,
and I think that it is being addressed.
What are your thoughts on the Facilities
Master Plan and what should be prioritized?
When you really start to break it down, you
need windows that are safe and working. You
need air conditioning for the hot days. You
need electricity that is not going to threaten
the integrity of the building. You need the
basics. The way it seems to be laid out in the
Master Plan, it is appropriately time-lined.
What is your feeling about the City/
District relationship and what, if anything,
should change?
I don’t really know much about that relationship.
Should I be elected, you can ask
me then.
What is your opinion on the District’s
recent aquatics use agreement with the
City of El Segundo?
I can say that we have been going to The
Plunge, and The Plunge is an amazing facility,
but it is obviously dated. This goes back to
my thought of Mayberry versus modern Mayberry,
where you find a balance. An aquatics
center that is going to be as gorgeous as this
one will be a huge draw and will only be an
asset. A great bonus to the community, but
I don’t want it to overshadow The Plunge.
What is your opinion on the International
Baccalaureate Programme at El Segundo
Middle School and if it is the right path?
I did research on the IB Programme, and
from what I see, it is a good thing to have at
the Middle School. Whether or not it takes
away from the overall focus of the curriculum
could be an issue. However, if you only focus
on test scores, and results, as opposed as to
what is happening to the child, there (can
be) a disconnect.
What is the best way to ensure high
academic scores and to address any score
drops (such as in Math, English Language
Arts)?
My opinion is that it involves parent involvement.
It’s up to the collaborative effort
of the parent, the teacher and the student.
The parent has to be involved. Without all
working together, there will be fallout. It
involves trust. The parents need to trust that
teachers know what they are doing. Teachers
need to trust that the parents have their back,
and they all need to trust that the child is
working as hard as they can.
What should be done with the surplus
monies from the Imperial School land sale?
It seems like there has been a very smart
use of the money. I love the forward thinking,
investing money for a continued return.
Everything has been handled in a very smart
manner.
What is your take on state funding challenges
and how to address those?
I know that we are one of the lowest funded
communities. It is all about parent involvement,
which can help cushion financial burdens. The
Education Foundation is an amazing program,
which can help supplement funding. There
could be a subcommittee that focuses on
grants. There are so many smart people in this
community that could contribute. Funding is
a huge challenge. But look at how well these
schools are doing right now.
What didn’t we ask that you feel is
important to address?
Nothing. I went back to read some of my
mom’s campaign statements, and I am proud
to say that I am running because our kids
deserve the best -- and if I can make that
happen, sign me up!
What is something about you that people
would be surprised to know about?
I worked on Capitol Hill for a little while,
then decided to go into acting, because both
are the same thing -- and I thought Hollywood
was more exciting than D.C. Being a
full-time mom is a lot more difficult than I
anticipated. •
