Joey Gorte takes an inside handoff and races 39 yards for an El Segundo touchdown.
The Eagles had one possession that consumed
nearly the entire fourth quarter on the
running clock. El Segundo went 72 yards in
12 plays, capped by Alex Heflin’s one-yard
touchdown plunge.
Head coach Steve Shevlin said it was a total
team effort on both sides of the ball. When an
injury to one of the top centers in the South
Bay occurred, the Eagles went with a backup
with little experience who filled in very well.
Three-year starter Jess Caravello was injured
on a play in the first half and was replaced by
Jose Aceves. The extent of Caravello’s injury
wasn’t determined, but he could miss Friday
night’s game. “Losing Jess was a blow to the
line because we’ve had other injury issues. Jess
is one of the best linemen in the area, but we
made some adjustments and got through it,”
said Coach Shevlin.
Linebackers Tim Schartz and James Amerault
led an inspired defense, while defensive ends
Alex Ron and Shawn Lyon each sacked the
quarterback. The defense has also had some
key players missing. Sophomore defensive
tackle Colin McEwan filled in nicely and had
two tackles for loss.
With the non-league schedule over, the Eagles
turn their focus on repeating as Ocean League
champions and it starts Friday night at home
when they face Culver City. The Centaurs are
the top-ranked team in the CIF-SS Division
11 polls. They have an explosive offense that
averages 47 points per game. So it should be a
good test for both teams since the El Segundo
defense has allowed a CIF Southern Section
Division 7 low 37 points over the first five
games. Other than Lompoc (33) and Pacifica
(35), the Eagles have given up the least amount
of points in the CIF Southern Section.
Boys Water Polo
The Eagles improved to 12-3 on the season
and 2-0 in Ocean League play with their 18-3
win over Culver City and 19-3 dominance of
Beverly Hills. Against Culver City, the Eagles
utilized their speed to overwhelm the Centaurs.
Seven players scored goals, including freshman
Jaden Van der Woude who had a season-high
four goals off of the bench. Caden Kastigar
was strong in the goal, blocking 10 shots as
well as making some great full court passes.
The Eagles started strongly against Beverly
Hills and cruised to another victory. It was
another game dictated by a dominant defense
and the ability to transition quickly from
defense to offense. Again the Eagles had
a balanced scoring attack, with nine different
players scoring goals. Freshman Mason Jaeger
had three goals, while Owen Hale and Kyle
Crist each had four goals.
The Eagles host Torrance today at 3 p.m.
and then host the 48th Annual Henry Stuart
South Bay Tournament starting Friday and
concluding with the championship rounds
at Mira Costa on Saturday. The tournament
features top teams from CIF-SS Division 1,
2, 3 and 4. Next week, the Eagles host Santa
Monica on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Girls Volleyball
The Lady Eagles improved to 2-1 in Ocean
League play (13-8 overall) and won going
away in a sweep of Lawndale High (25-
14,25-17,25-8). Maddie Kurke hit 0.789 and
Alyssa Pearson hit 0.750 to lead their team
to an easy three-game sweep.
The Eagles played Hawthorne on Tuesday
and host Santa Monica today at 3:15 p.m. in
a showdown against the Vikings who are tied
atop the Ocean League standings.
