picked the wrong time for its defense to defy
it. West L.A. scored two unearned in the first
inning to take a 2-0 lead. ESLL countered
by scoring four runs highlighted by RBIs by
Cole Knupfer, Rico, and Quaintance to give
the team a 4-2 lead.
In the second inning, Cole Englehardt hit a
ball that was misplayed in centerfield and he
wound up on second base. He later scored on
an RBI single by Knupfer and Rico drove him
in two batters later to make it 6-2. Quaintance’s
RBI double in the fourth extended his team’s
lead to 7-2. West L.A. tied the game with a
five-run fifth inning. West L.A. took advantage
of a walk, hit batter and an error and went on
to score four runs in the sixth inning. ESLL
had no answer and fell 11-7.
The game wasn’t without controversy. West
L.A. fans continued to taunt El Segundo players
throughout the game. Their coaching staff
constantly argued unarguable plays or pitches
that disrupted play and El Segundo’s momentum.
It was seemingly a Bush League style of play
by the host team, but El Segundo’s players took
the high road and played through with class.
ESLL 10s Fall in Final
El Segundo’s talented 10s entered the Section
4 tournament on a roll fresh off their District
36 championship. With four players including
Chase Mattoon, Gio Blanco, Ryan Wiacek
and Jordan Slavens on last year’s team that
reached the Southern California Tournament,
El Segundo was considered a favorite to win
a second consecutive Section 4 championship.
In the opener after spotting West L.A. a
2-0 lead, El Segundo came roaring back with
a 12-2 win. ESLL put together a seven-run
fourth inning highlighted by Sebastian Gomez,
Camden Quaintance, Slavens and Wiacek who
each drove in runs. El Segundo ace Slavens
started and gave way to Wiacek and Blanco
to finish so each could be used in remaining
games.
There’s a reason why El Segundo and Torrance
have a friendly rivalry at the high school
level in all sports. It stems from teams from
each city facing off at a young age and in
this case Little League baseball. Torrance’s
offensive talented lineup was too much for El
Segundo and won 10-0.
ESLL bounced back against West L.A. in
an elimination game by easily winning 6-1.
In the third inning Slavens and Wiacek each
singled and scored on Mattoon’s double. Mattoon
would later score on a ground ball for a
3-0 lead. In the fifth inning Wiacek reached
on an error, Mattoon drew a seven-pitch walk
and Blanco’s ground ball was mishandled. All
three ended up scoring to make it 6-0. West
L.A.’s only run came in the sixth inning on
a sacrifice fly.
ESLL and Torrance met for the Section 4 title
with the winner advancing to the Little League
Southern California championship tournament.
Since Torrance was undefeated, ESLL would
need to win two games to advance. El Segundo
won a thrilling controversy-filled first game
7-6, but fell in the championship game 10-5.
El Segundo jumped out to a 3-0 first inning
lead in the first game. Wiacek and Blanco
each walked and Wyatt Francis and Camden
Quaintance each had RBI singles. Francis
would score on a passed ball.
In the third inning Torrance’s Dominic
Golea’s RBI single made it 3-1. Torrance took
a 6-3 lead in the fourth inning on back-to-back
RBI hits by Goleia and Gibson Turner. El
Segundo countered with two runs of its own
when Quaintance doubled and Tyler Brooke
singled. Both scored on a two-run double by
Wiacek to make it 6-5.
In the controversial sixth inning with two
outs Slavens singled, took second base on a
passed ball and scored on Wiacek’s RBI double
to tie the game. Mattoon followed with a slow
ground ball to shortstop. With Wiacek running,
Mattoon reached first base on a close play. The
call by the umpire was delayed momentarily
and then called safe. Wiacek continued running
and headed for the plate. Torrance first baseman
Aiden Anaya threw to the plate, but Wiacek
beat the throw and slid under the tag for a
7-6 El Segundo win. Afterwards the Torrance
players were obviously upset, but the Torrance
parents began spewing obscenities over what
they thought was a poor umpiring call.
In the championship game, Torrance took an
early 4-0 lead in the first inning and won 10-5.
Torrance took advantage of a double steal and
four hits to take the early lead. El Segundo
countered with a second inning run. With a
4-0 lead, Torrance played the infield in with
a runner on third base in the second inning.
Francis was aboard on a fielder’s choice and
scored on a ground ball. If it weren’t for two
strikeouts that followed, El Segundo could
have had a big inning.
In the third inning El Segundo closed the
deficit when Slavens singled, Wiacek walked
and both scored on Blanco’s double off the
centerfield fence to make it 4-3. In the fourth
inning, Torrance’s Anaya hit a three-run home
run for an 8-3 lead. The lead was extended to
10-3 in the fifth inning on Dominic Golea’s
two-run single.
El Segundo wouldn’t go quietly in the sixth
inning. Gomez walked and scored on Slavens’
ground ball. Mattoon’s RBI double made it
10-5 before Torrance closed out the game.
Legion Season Ends
The American Legion Blues played .500 ball
during the Pacific League this summer. They
played in the postseason tournament with the
winner advancing to the American Legion
State tournament in Yountville. Unfortunately,
the Blues came up short and were eliminated.
Babe Ruth 13s Playing
in Pacific Southwest Regional
El Segundo started play in the Babe Ruth
League 13-Year-Old Pacific Southwest Regional
in Price, Utah this week. They faced Eastside
Babe Ruth of Carbon, Utah in the first round
this past Monday. The tournament sends the
winner to the Babe Ruth League World Series
in Westfield, Massachusetts starting Aug. 8.
Softball All-Stars Head to Western
National Tournaments
In the 14u division, El Segundo is competing
at the Western Nationals in Redding, CA.
this week. The tournament started Tuesday
and runs through Sunday. El Segundo has had
recent success in this prestigious tournament,
finishing second. With a deep pitching staff
and a hitting lineup that averaged eight runs
per game at the State Tournament, this team
is poised to compete for a Western National
Championship title.
In the 12u division, El Segundo advanced to
the Western National Tournament in Medford,
Oregon next week (July 29-Aug. 4). They
advanced after overcoming a tough first round
loss to North-Shore of San Diego. El Segundo
survived four elimination games to advance
and compete in a championship field of 33
teams representing Hawaii, Idaho, Washington,
Montana, Oregon and California. •
