El Segundo Moms Lead the
Charge to Prevent Gun Violence
By Brian Simon
While the subject of gun control continues
to be one of the most polarizing and divisive
issues in the country, the question of how best
to prevent gun violence in general remains at the
forefront. With that in mind, three El Segundo
moms recently took it upon themselves to, in
their own words, “make their community a
safer place for their children.” Despite hectic
schedules with kids and jobs, Joanna Bowe,
Julia Cohen and Shannon Crouch agreed to
become directors of the new South Bay Chapter
of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in
America. The branch falls under the umbrella
of Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-partisan
organization that describes itself as “pro-gun
safety,” but not “anti-gun.” Indiana mother
Shannon Watts founded Moms Demand Action
as a grass roots organization soon after the
December 2012 Sandy Hook school tragedy in
Newtown, Connecticut. The message has since
spread to all 50 states, with the South Bay
Chapter among the fastest growing nationwide
with over 3,000 members already.
“Our goal is to take collective volunteer
action to keep our families and communities
safe,” Bowe said. Crouch elaborated on her
colleague’s comments. “This offered me one
of the most clear-cut ways in which I could
be involved, opportunities for training and
education, and the chance to make an impact
in my own community,” she said. Speaking
on behalf of parents in general, Cohen added,
“I want my kids never to be afraid of being
shot by a gun, but right now it seems like a
reasonable thing to be afraid of.”
The trio originally formed an El Segundobased
chapter last fall, but saw the need to
expand their reach after the Feb. 14 Parkland,
Florida school shooting that resulted in 17
deaths and another 17 wounded. The South Bay
Chapter of Moms Demand Action encompasses
the area between LAX and Long Beach with
all the coastal communities in between.
Among the group’s stated goals are to make
the South Bay community safer; focus on legislation
for common sense gun reform; and create

Updated Election Vote
Totals Released: Same Winners
With 700-plus vote by mail and provisional
ballots still left to address after last week’s
municipal election, the City Clerk’s office
verified the remaining ballots and then
canvassed, inspected and counted them on
April 19. The updated totals did not change
who won, but flip-flopped the order of the
number one and two finishers -- with Chris
Pimentel now the top vote-getter with 1,993,
followed by Scot Nicol with 1,982. Lance
Giroux came in third with 1,767 votes and
Maria Barden fourth with 474 votes. The
Measure C three-quarter-cent sales tax initiative
received 2,869 yes votes and 506 no votes.
The election results will become certified
once the current seated Council accepts a
resolution from City Clerk Tracy Weaver
during the May 1 public meeting. At that
point, Weaver will swear in Pimentel and
Nicol, who will take their seats on the dais as
Mayor Suzanne Fuentes and Councilmember
Mike Dugan step down. The new Council
will then appoint a mayor and mayor pro
tem. The full election results can be viewed
on the City’s website: www.elsegundo.org.

Local Communities Help
with Housing for AFB Personnel
In an effort to increase the supply of
housing for military personnel assigned to
Los Angeles AFB, a number of neighboring
communities are pledging to encourage
property owners to offer service members
reasonable rental rates along with other
benefits. Under the initiative — spearheaded
by the Air Force Community Partnership
Program, elected leaders from surrounding
communities and the South Bay Aerospace
Alliance — participating landlords would
waive security deposits and application fees,
and offer rates in line with military members’
basic allowance for housing (BAH). Landlords
also would include language in rental
agreements allowing personnel to terminate
leases early if they are issued orders to deploy,
separate or relocate.
So far, the cities of Hawthorne, El Segundo
and Redondo Beach have signed memorandums
of understanding, with several additional
communities expected to follow suit later
this year. Participating communities would
provide Los Angeles AFB’s housing management
office a list of landlords who have
agreed to provide financial concessions to
service members. A summary of the resolution
adopted by the Hawthorne City Council
states that the rise in housing costs in the
Greater Los Angeles area in recent years has
made it difficult for personnel to find housing
that can be covered by their BAH. Many
rentals also require high security deposits,
the summary states.
Los Angeles AFB is the home of the
Space and Missile Systems Center, the Air
Force’s center of excellence for acquiring
and developing military space systems, and
one of the South Bay’s largest employers.
