and Facilities Dylan Farris next showcased
the 2017/18 District “Educators of the Year,”
which included Lauren Turner (El Segundo
High); Lori Preuss (El Segundo Middle
School); Donna Scaltrito (Center Street
School); and Michelle Varghese (Richmond
Street School). “I think here in El Segundo,”
Moore said, “we are extremely fortunate to
have a very talented team of professionals in
the classroom. All four of these individuals
are exemplary within their own grade level,
or content area.”
El Segundo High mathematics teacher
Turner has worked in the education field
for 15 years, 12 of those with ESUSD.
She emailed prior to the meeting that she
has been fortunate “to work with the math
team at the high school.” She then went on
to mention the virtues of her collaboration
working with different disciplines outside
of the math department, summing up in her
email: “When you are on this team, it is hard
not to be inspired on a daily basis.”
Farris revealed that Turner was also selected
as the District’s teacher of the year.
Varghese, a first grade teacher at Richmond
since 2015, emailed that she is “so grateful
to work with such amazing colleagues,
administrators and students. I genuinely
look forward to coming to work each and
every day.”
Farris spoke of the accomplishments of
Center Street’s Scaltrito, a third grade teacher
who has spent three decades as a classroom
teacher -- 20 years for ESUSD. She has two
Master’s degrees, Farris said, and revels
when her ex-students come back to visit
her to share their successes and thank her
for being their teacher.
Middle School teacher Preuss has spent
her entire career of 18 years with the District
teaching myriad classes. Farris said that Preuss
“enjoys adolescent humor and admits that she
can often be found laughing uncontrollably”
at her students’ antics.
Farris also spearheaded the next
presentation, which honored District classified
employees, including Tomas Romo
(student support services); Melissa Blanco-
Gomez (instructional assistance); Walter
Gomez (office and technical support); a
nd Araceli Mora (maintenance, operations
and facilities).
Romo, who works at El Segundo
High, has also been selected for recognition
at the county level, with his name also
forwarded to the state level for possible
further recognition.
Farris praised the job Romo, who has
worked for ESUSD for 19 years, has done
in doing “everything for the students,” and
pointing them in the right direction as they
wind their way through the K-12 school years.
Blanco-Gomez has been a para-educator
for ESUSD for 18 years. Working at Center
Street, she is, Farris said, “deeply committed
to working with the students who need the
most support” in the district.
Walter Gomez has been employed in the
IT department for the past five years. Farris
called him “an invaluable resource,” noting
how Gomez has served as the “right-hand
person” of District IT Director Danny Gauna,
“keeping the District running whenever
Danny is away.” Farris added, “He is a hero
in the district.”
Mora, lead custodian at El Segundo Middle
School, has worked for the District for five
years, and, Farris said, quickly advanced to
the lead custodian position after demonstrating
her strong work ethic and attention to detail.
Superintendent Moore, wrapping up her
fourth year at the helm of the District, was
the next employee honored. She was recently
selected as the California School Administrators
(ACSA) Superintendent of the Year
for Region 14. The District’s administrative
cabinet, in concert with the School Board,
nominated Moore for the award in recognition
of her “outstanding contributions to the
students, staff and community,” noting the
“great strides in technology and innovation,
staff development, facilities projects and
continued community partnerships” that have
occurred during her tenure.
Farris was again the presenter, and in his
speech mentioned a recent Forbes magazine
story that spoke of 10 tenets of leadership
embodied by successful CEOs and how
Moore has nailed them all.
“This award means a lot, because it is
specifically coming from the [District] team,”
Moore said. “Certainly, I would not be here
unless it was for the Board of Education.”
Not looking at her position as a stepping
stone, Moore added, “I feel blessed to serve
the students of the District and hope to be
here for many years. I am the lucky one to
serve with you. We are unstoppable. We are
not El Segundo -- we are El Primero.”
The Board next tackled multiple consent
agenda items. Three items dealt with the
District’s issuance of “request for proposals”
from interested vendors. These RFPs solicit
bids from the “lowest possible, responsible”
parties to provide waste management services;
provide postage/mailing equipment;
and procure District transportation services,
as ESUSD continues to prudently spend
available funds.
The action item agenda was dotted with
standard-issue items, including a resolution
designating the week of May 6-12 as “Certificated
School Employee Week,” and the
formal approval of a new sign language class
to be offered at El Segundo High.
Moore, giving kudos to the District’s
certificated employees, said, “Our entire
teaching force is really exceptional. It’s all
about the teacher in the class and what gets
accomplished. We are getting great feedback
in the community about our teachers. It is
a hard job.”
Moore next highlighted upcoming events
on the informational calendar, noting two
upcoming town halls that will take place on
May 10 and 17 and will allow members of
the public to express their thoughts as the
Board takes a fresh look at the District’s
Long-Range Facilities Master Plan and contemplates
placing a school bond initiative on
the November ballot.
Board member reports followed and Moore
then wrapped up the 90-minute meeting with
her report.
The next regularly scheduled El Segundo
School Board meeting is set for Tuesday,
May 8. •
