Eagles Start Ocean League Games
By Gregg McMullin
The Ocean League schedule is underway
and the Eagles are poised to win league
championships in baseball and boys volleyball.
The softball team stumbled, but looks
to rebound. Both lacrosse teams are gearing
up for a run at a league title themselves.

Sweeps Opening Week
El Segundo swept Culver City 4-2 and 8-0
and sits atop the Ocean League standings.
The Eagles and the Centaurs were thought
to be the favorites to win the Ocean League.
The Eagles are looking for their 36th league
title in the past 58 years.
El Segundo started its quest strong and
rode the arm of Jaime Galicia, who tossed
a complete-game five-hitter. The only two
runs scored off the Eagles’ ace came in the
first inning on an RBI double by Mason Lee
and an RBI single by Joaquin Hines. From
then on, the Centaurs’ bats were pretty much
silenced. Galicia struck out 14 and walked
just one, throwing 78 pitches for strikes and
only 18 balls.
The Eagles’ offense struggled against the
Centaurs’ starter freshman Adrian Montenegro.
El Segundo could muster up just three
hits and took advantage of six walks and
two batters who were hit by a pitch. Mateo
Camano walked to lead off the first inning
and later scored when Matt Romero walked
with the bases loaded. In the second inning,
Ian Bonham doubled and scored on a fielder’s
choice by Camano.
In the fifth inning, the Eagles capitalized on
a two-run error. Ethan Burner reached on a
fielder’s choice and Galicia singled. Romero
then sent a towering fly ball to right field
that was misplayed and dropped by Shawn
Hough, allowing Burner and Galicia to score.
Though it wasn’t a pretty win offensively,
the defense was spot on -- especially Galicia,
who improved to 4-3 on the year and has 60
strike outs in 48 innings.
In the second game, the Eagles pounded
out 11 hits in an 8-0 win. Benny Casillas
was 3-for-4 and was a home run away from
hitting for the cycle. Burner and Camano
each had two hits and Julian Rodriquez
had a two-run triple and scored a run in the
Eagles’ four-run seventh inning.
Quinn Kirsten went the distance for the
Eagles and had one of his best outings of the
year. Kirsten shut out the Centaurs on two
hits while striking out four to improve to 2-2
on the year while lowering his ERA to 2.20.
El Segundo faced South Torrance in the
third round of the Redondo Tournament, but
came away with a frustrating 5-4 loss to the
top-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section
Division 4. The Spartans took an early
2-0 lead before the Eagles scored a run in
their half of the third inning. Ryan Sullivan
walked, Burner singled and Casillas drew a
walk to load the bases. Galicia walked on
seven pitches to force a run in and make it
2-1. In the third inning Romero’s two-out,
two-run single gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth inning, Burner was aboard on
a three-base error and then Galicia’s RBI
single made it 4-2. South Torrance cut the
Eagles’ lead to 4-3 in the fifth inning when
Kevin Ishamaru had a run-scoring double
and later tied the game at 4-4 on a double
steal attempt.
In the sixth inning the Eagles had a golden
opportunity to score, but Romero was thrown
out at third base. With runners on second
and third with two outs South brought in
hard-throwing Josh Alpough, who struck out
Nick Villa on a 3-2 count to end the inning.
In the seventh inning, the Spartans won the
game when they loaded the bases and Josh
Sheck drew a questionable 3-2 walk-off walk
to end the game.
The Eagles were in action this week
at Beverly Hills on Tuesday and at home
today at 3:15 p.m. against the Normans.
The Eagles host Simi Valley on Saturday
morning at 11 a.m.
Softball Team Rebounds with
Big Win against Beverly Hills
The Eagles fell to Culver City in the Ocean
League opener, but throttled Beverly Hills
22-0 in a mercy rule shortened game. El
Segundo pounded out 25 hits, led by Adri
Hebert, Monique Benjamin and Jade Johnson
who each had four hits. Gabby Benjamin,
who was 2-for-3, hit two home runs and had
five RBIs. Hebert had a two-run triple and
four RBIs. Katie Croxall continued her hot
bat, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Johnson had a single, triple and home run
with three RBIs and three runs scored.
The Eagles host the El Segundo Tournament
this Saturday and next Saturday. They
face Narbonne at 8:30 a.m. and King/Drew
at 1 p.m.
Volleyball Team gunning for
another Ocean League Title
If the Eagles are to win their eighth league
title, they’ll need to battle Santa Monica
for the top spot. They defeated the Vikings
earlier in the season in the Silver Division
Kaili Reitano is hitting .471 for the Eagles. Adri Hebert is not only a solid shortstop, but could be one of the team’s top hitters.
