Sports from page 3
his first year would be a test. Preparing for a
season beset with a pandemic made it even
more of a challenge. It didn’t help that a
program that has been so successful and had
as many as seventy players making up three
levels was reduced to 57 players for two
levels, including just ten seniors. So facing
a perennial powerhouse such as North Torrance
would be another obstacle to overcome
in an abbreviated season.
Before the game against North, Coach
Green was faced with another dilemma.
Three starters were declared out for the
game due to injuries and would be forced to
replace them. Then during the game, eight
more players were injured and came out of
the game for extended periods. It led to the
Eagles getting shutout for just the tenth time
in the last 18 seasons.
North took advantage of Eagle turnovers
and converted them into scores. Penalties by
both teams marred an otherwise mistake-filled
game on both sides. It was the injuries to
El Segundo players that doomed the Eagles.
Matt Kusserow, Cooper Dolan, Damien Garcia,
Wyatt Burnett, Jason McGowan, Mason
Kahn, Duke Sanders, and backup quarterback
Leonel Menendez all suffered game-ending
injuries. The status of each is day-to-day,
and it was unknown who would be ready
to play Friday night.
In the lopsided loss Coach Green saw
some positives come out of the game. “With
so many injuries, the backups got a ton of
valuable snaps and got game-time experience.”
The Eagles return home Friday night at
7 p.m. to face Torrance. Prior to the game,
the seniors will be honored on Senior Night.
Garrell Leads Cross Country
Team to Victory
In the final cross country meet of the year
the Eagles edged South Torrance at home. For

sun-drenched cool morning.
Will Garrell capped his senior season with
a blistering 15:10 time in a race that he led
from start to finish. Marcus Ortiz, another
senior, ran a solid race kicking it in on mile
two and finished third. Lucas Romero, Nasai
Rivas, Luke Harrell, Daniel Pop and Jeff
Antel filled out the roster and will all return
in the fall for the Eagles.
On the girls side Ami Jacobson led a depleted
cross country team that included three
freshmen a sophomore and three juniors. The
others were Kaitlin Pintens, Ainsley Gulden,
Kristin Begeman, Kiera O’Keefe, Julianna
Guzman and Deirdre Elliot. •
