Yes, we do custom!
You dream it, we build it!
So, Chacon speaks with them, figures out which
processes are taking unnecessary time and hours,
and comes back to his team to develop an application
that can streamline the process. His
job makes everyone else’s job faster and easier.
During the pandemic, these interviews have
to be conducted via secure video calls, which
Chacon says has been the most difficult part of
his job. Typically, he’d get to talk to the Operators
in person, see where they work, and get a
better understanding of what his team should be
building for them. However, post-pandemic, he
believes this innovation in communication will
ultimately aid Space Force, saying that being
able to call instead of travel with every update
can help with things like previewing prototypes.
Growing up in the South Bay and playing
soccer, Chacon is very familiar with the area.
In El Segundo, he says, the base has strong
ties with the local community. Everyone on
the base lives nearby and frequents El Segundo
parks, restaurants, and attractions often.
“As a military member, it’s easy to get stationed
in a new city and feel alone or isolated,”
he says, “I’ve never felt that here. And my
buddies who come from out of town definitely
love living here, too.” Since being stationed in
El Segundo, Chacon has joined a recreational
soccer league. He has friends who’ve joined
local basketball teams or worked as coaches
for local sports teams as a way to give back
and interact with the community. They work
often, he says, with the parks and recreation
department to coordinate events and work with
the city. The Chamber of Commerce has said
that they will celebrate the birthday of Space
Force with the base this year. He frequents
restaurants like Rock & Brews and travels
to other entities in the area like Boeing and
the LA Kings to learn and make connections.
In the future, Chacon hopes to go to grad
school. He hopes to expand his team in the Force.
Mostly, he plans to continue completing his assignments
to the best of his ability, knowing that
his work directly affects the USSF and, ultimately,
American citizens. This ability to help other people
is what keeps him motivated every day at his job.
As for El Segundo, he hopes that Space Force
will continue to be the best neighbor it can be and
that residents feel comfortable asking questions.
Chacon (second from left, top) joined a local recreational soccer league.
“We love answering questions,” Chacon says,
“because it, in turn, allows you to understand
better what we’re doing.” Knowing that Space
Force very much wants to be a part of the
community, he encourages residents to reach
out if there are any events or programs, they’d
like Space Force to participate in.
Being the first in his family to join the Air
Force or the military at large was exciting. Being
part of the first generation of Space Force
Guardians is even more exciting.
“I think at the moment,” he concludes, “we
sometimes don’t realize how amazing or how
big these milestones really are. But, when we’re
older, I’m going to be telling my grandkids that
I was one of the first Space Force Members.” •
