Barbara Celeste Ernest
Barbara Celeste Ernest, April
11, 1928-March 17, 2021. Our
beloved mother, grandmother,
aunt, cousin, friend and neighbor,
passed away on one of her
favorite holidays – St. Patrick’s
Day. Barbara was born in Los
Angeles to Annah Moran and
US Army recruiter Henry Moran.
She was proud of being an LA
girl from John C. Fremont High
School who loved LA sunshine
and its beaches. She was predeceased by
both parents and all of her siblings – Lenora
Moran, Henry Moran, Jr., Rosemary Moran,
Doreen Riddle, and Jacquelyn Silliman.
Barbara met her future husband, Virgil
Ernest, at the US Naval Station in China
Lake, CA where he was stationed as a Marine
and she was working as a civil servant,
marrying in 1948. Besides finding each other,
they made lifelong friends during their time
there as well as at Cal Poly SLO where they
lived for four happy years. Then this LA city
girl became a farmer’s wife in Tulare CA.
Along the way, Barbara and Virgil became
parents to ten children. She always said that
her life’s goal was to have a large family,
and she sure did. Family connections were
most important to her.
People always knew where Barbara was
because she could be heard laughing, talking,
or singing. She loved organizing family events
and designing projects for home improvements.
Everything was a subject for a party,
even “work parties” where huge numbers of
family members would gather at someone’s
home and spend the day working on home
improvements, all organized by Mom, while
at the same time telling stories and laughing.
Also, she claimed to be the instigator of
the Ernest family reunions where she made
sure her children were going to
“know their cousins.” Vacations
almost always involved visiting
family members around the US.
She especially loved Hawaii!
Through all of these events and
travels , she always had a camera
at hand and painstakingly created
photo albums of them all,
thereby leaving her descendants
a huge photographic record of
her/their lives.
This LA girl returned to the South Bay
when she and Virgil moved to El Segundo
in 1966 where she worked as a bookkeeper/
office manager for several local businesses.
Barbara was a faithful parishioner at St. Anthony
Catholic Church, where her children
attended school, and was honored a few
years ago by the parish for her many years
of devotion.
Barbara passed away at her home where
all ten of her children had gathered. She is
survived by sons Don (Deb), Dave (Laurie),
Dana (Linda), Devin (Stacey), Dan (Mari) and
daughters Deborah, Dorinda (Paul), Drucilla
(Greg), Deirdre (Jim), Dulcie (Sheldon), as well
as 28 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
Additionally, she opened her home to extended
family members and friends over the years. She
was a role model for many in how to live a
joyful life of integrity, service, tolerance and
unconditional love and had the strongest work
ethic and amount of energy, even into her last
years. She will be missed by many.
Due to COVID-19, memorial/funeral arrangements
are on hold. Final resting place will
ultimately be beside her husband at Holy Cross
Catholic Cemetery, Culver City. Donations
can be made in her name to two organizations
near and dear to her - Children’s Hospital of
Los Angeles and the American Red Cross. •

Drift Into Serenity with
Max Richter’s Sleep
Morgan Rojas for cinemacy.com
“My personal lullaby for a frenetic world.
A manifesto for a slower pace of existence.”
–Max Richter
Max Richter is a composer that I’ve
admired for years. His beautiful, soulfully
constructed compositions have scored the
cinematic achievements of Ad Astra, Arrival,
and Shutter Island, among others. And now,
it’s Max’s turn to step into the spotlight as the
star of his own feature film, Max Richter’s
Sleep, now streaming on MUBI.
Directed by Natalie Johns, Max Richter’s
Sleep is an arresting look at the infamous
performance of his celebrated eight-hour
ambient opus “Sleep” at an open-air concert
in Los Angeles. Together with his creative
partner Yulia Mahr, the documentary explores
the genesis of the complex piece, as well as
the relationship that his fans have developed
to it after spending the night under the stars
while Max and company performed it live.
Max Richter’s Sleep is not only a groundbreaking
composition but also a massively
overwhelming physical performance. Running
eight hours long (his original performance–not
the doc) the “Sleep” composition consists of
204 classical movements and was composed
in consultation with American neuroscientist
David Eagleman, whose input was to scientifically
examine the relationship between music
and the subconscious mind during sleep.
Natalie Johns precisely documents the
strength that it takes to create the perfect
calming atmosphere, all the while emphasizing
Richter’s mission statement of “stillness
and meditation.” As the world seems to be
swinging from one disastrous news event to
the next, Max Richter’s Sleep aims to unite
all who watch in a collective moment of
musical reflection. •
