It was a tough week for the Eagles. The
baseball team lost two nail bitters and a
forgettable game. The football team was
decimated by injuries and was blown out
while the girls’ cross country team ran shorthanded.
On a brighter note, the softball team
opened up with a win, and the boys cross
country ran to victory.
Baseball Team Drops Three
The Eagles played flawless defense against
Bishop Montgomery, but the bats were
silenced in their 1-0 loss to the Knights.
On a miserable cold and windy afternoon,
both pitchers took advantage of the elements.
The Eagles sent Jake Stolnack to the mound,
and the crafty right-hander kept the Knights
off balance. He gave up one unearned run on
three hits, no walks, and struck out two. The
Eagles were baffled by the Knight’s Derek
Murphy’s pitch selection. Kenny Chung broke
up Murphy’s perfect game in the fifth inning
but was thrown out at the plate, attempting
to score on Lloyd Sapanza’s single. That was
essentially the extent of El Segundo’s offense.
The Eagles traveled to Santa Monica to
take on the Vikings and held a 6-2 lead after
two innings. In the third inning, Trevor Steel
singled and later scored on a catcher’s error.
Sapanza reached base on a passed ball followed
by consecutive RBI singles by Jack
Stoker and Rafael Smith to make it 9-2.
The Vikings countered with six runs of their
own to cut El Segundo’s lead to 9-8. In the
sixth inning, Santa Monica took advantage
of one hit, two walks, and three wild pitches
to score two runs and take a 10-9 lead. In
the seventh, Sapanza led off with a single,
but he was stranded at third base when the
next three hitters went in order, and the

Eagles fell 10-9.
The 7-0 loss to Torrance will be one to
forget. Nothing seemed to mesh on defense,
and the offense was again shutdown. El Segundo
pitchers including Kenny Chung, Brady
Engelhardt, Trevor Steel and Josh Zarneki
threw well enough to combine for a win.
Together they gave up seven unearned runs
on six hits and two walks. Rafael Smith broke
up Torrance’s Cory Nunez’s perfect game in
the fifth inning with a single to right field;
Brendan McAndrews and Kenny Chung had
the other two hits for El Segundo.
The Eagles played host to Peninsula on
Tuesday and travel to Redondo tonight. The
Eagle’s next home game is Tuesday, April 6,
when they host Bishop Montgomery at 6 p.m.
Softball Team Starts
Season with Victory
The Lady Eagles started their 2021 season
on a positive note with their 2-0 win over
Mary Star. Bailey Gertsch threw a complete
game two-hitter and struck out 10. It was a
pitcher’s duel with Star’s pitchers giving up
two runs (one earned) on four hits. In the
fourth inning, Sophia Marrero singled and
advanced to third base on an error. Laila
Phillips had an RBI single and later scored
on Shanai Owens’ RBI single.
It was a solid first game for the Lady
Eagles. Head coach Megan McCann was
pleased with her team’s season opener. “Bailey
(Gertsch) hit her spots, and the defense
played well behind her.” El Segundo faced
Mira Costa on Tuesday evening and travel
to Culver City today at 3:15 p.m.
