Brett Field to Host International
Little League Tournament Fri/Sat
By Gregg McMullin
Beach City Baseball Academy will be
hosting team Kitasuna from Japan and the
Canada National Team for the seventh annual
international 12 and under baseball tournament.
Brett Field, the El Segundo softball field and
Marine Park in Manhattan Beach will be the
sites of the tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Tonight there are two exhibition games that
include the National Team from Canada facing a
team from the El Segundo Little League called
Big Dawgs at 5 pm. At 7 p.m., a team from Beach
Cities Baseball Academy takes on Kitasuna.
This is the seventh year that Beach City has
hosted the tournament. The first tournament
evolved when a devastating major earthquake
hit Tokyo seven years ago. Originally a team
from Beach City Baseball Academy had
planned to visit and play a series of games
against the Kitasuna team. When the 2011
Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami struck the
coast of Japan, the magnitude 9.0 undersea
quake caused devastation and essentially the
cancellation of the Beach City team’s trip.
Beach City Academy owner Richard Murad
brainstormed with others and decided to bring
some relief to some very unfortunate people.
He invited the Japanese team to leave the
devastation behind and free their minds of the
turmoil that had wreaked havoc on their city
and country. He invited the team and their
supporters to El Segundo to play a tournament
of games against local squads right here at Brett
Field. Murad said, “It was the least we could
do for all the suffering they had to overcome.”
Over the years, Beach City Baseball
Academy has continued to stay in touch and
support as well as help sponsor the Kitasuna
Baseball Academy. For those who don’t know,
Kitasuna is a championship academy that has
a long-standing tradition of victories including
winning the 2015 and 2017 Little League
World Series. They have proven to enhance the
experience at the Little League World Series
through their fierce competition and admirable

School Walkout March 14
I need to express to you how very disappointed
I am with the school district for
allowing our schools and our children to be
used in the blatantly partisan protest on March
14 2018. These walkouts across the country
were orchestrated by well-funded organizations
with an obvious political agenda. We
have been asked to believe that a handful of
El Segundo children innocently appealed for
permission to participate in the classroom
walkouts, but this excuse is quite disingenuous
and isn’t going to fool too many people.
Clearly there were some highly manipulative
adults behind the scenes coaching these kids.
I’d like to suggest to the board that they
adhere to a strict policy of keeping our
schools apolitical. Thank you,
– Robert Grant
Doesn’t Like Two Lanes
This is in regards to your article on Scot
Nicol in the El Segundo Herald (Vol 107, No.11
March 15th 2018). I implore him to reconsider
his misguided opinion by incorporating
only two lanes of traffic to promote business
on Main Street. He should ask the businesses
in Playa del Rey how slowing traffic helped
them. It angers people to have someone think
they are doing something better for them when
clearly they are not. It did nothing for Mike
Bonin and it will do nothing for Scot Nicol.
I know many others who also think this way.
In order to avoid an overly congested Main
Street, which two lanes will cause, many will
resort to cutting thru the residential neighborhood.
Recent history shows the ineffective
results in both Playa Del Rey and Venice. I have
lived in El Segundo many years and do not
see any problems on Main Street. As for the
angled parking, it only causes people to do
illegal U turns across a lane of traffic trying to
get a parking spot. This proved to be a huge
problem in the Playa Del Rey road diet plan
that caused a spike in accidents. Please stop
trying to sell us on a traffic fiasco that clearly
does nothing to promote safety or local business.

Elderfest and Senior
Citizen of the Year Betty Jacobson
The Los Angeles County Commission for
older Adults celebrates May as Older American’s
Month and this year’s theme is “Engage
at Every Age.” This year’s goal emphasizes
that you are never too old (or too young) to
take part in activities that enrich your physical,
mental and emotional well-being. It also
celebrates the many ways older adults make
a difference in our communities.
The City of El Segundo selects a community
member to receive the award of
El Segundo Senior Citizen of the Year and
hosts the Elderfest celebration to honor all
senior citizens in the community. This year’s
Senior Citizen of the year is Betty Jacobson.
Betty is a longtime local resident and is currently
President of the El Segundo Senior
Club (since 2012). She worked at Hughes
Helicopter and then moved on to build a
successful real estate career in town. Betty
also belongs to the El Segundo Women’s
Club and volunteers her time with the USO.
When her kids and grandkids were young,
she spent a lot of time in the schools volunteering
with the PTA as room mom and
helping with “Character Counts.” Drawing
from that, she now has a passion for working
to make scholarships available to local high
school students.
For more information, please contact the
Joslyn Center at (310) 524-2705. Elderfest
will take place at Joslyn on May 12 from
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations are required
by May 7. Seating is limited. If you are
interested in being an event sponsor,
please contact Ryan Delgado at rdelgado@
