of the 2019-20 school year.
The Board shuffled agenda items on Thursday
night to accommodate ratification of the contract
of the new superintendent, whose parents were
in attendance. Silvers, currently the principal at
Dana Middle School, received glowing praise
from Board President JoAnne Kaneda, who
described the rigorous selection process that
led to the selection. She recalled that when
Silvers entered the room for his interview, he
“assumed the persona of superintendent that
no one else could touch.”
Following the contract ratification, members
of the public approached the Board, voicing
their concerns. Nine members of the public
spoke, with most of the speakers expressing their
thoughts about the proposed dual immersion
program, as well as the current and future state
of the CDC program.
The consensus among those who spoke
on Thursday night: The District needs to
communicate better with parents and become
more transparent in its dealings and decisions.
Parents also addressed their concerns, in this
two-parents working environment, of the lack
of full-time District daycare, which may force
them to migrate to adjoining school districts
to satisfy their needs.
After the public speakers took their turn,
Kaneda stepped down from the Board member
dais and approached the speaker podium.
She did so as a legacy Wiseburn parent and
member of the community – not under her
Board persona. Said Kaneda: “We care about
education, we care about our community, we
care about your kids. I hear what you are
saying and truly apologize for [any] lack of
communication.
The only special presentation on the agenda
came from District Director of Psychological
and Child Services Cathy Walker, who outlined
the parameters of the newly created registration
system for Before and After School Care
programs. Walker said she feels the new system
will “provide parents with a more efficient way
to register their child for our programs and

sportsmanship. Kitasuna’s storied history of
success includes five trips to the Little League
World Series in Williamsport, which includes
three championships.
This is the first year that a team from Canada
has entered the tournament. The Little Mountain
LL was the first chartered Little League outside
of the United States. Established in 1951, Little
Mountain LL has a rich history of providing
Little League for the children and families in
the central part of Vancouver, the 2010 Winter
Olympics city. Little Mountain LL is Canada’s
largest Little League with over 900 players
participating. It provides baseball development
for boys and girls from 4-12 years of age and
also has a Challenger Division for children
and youth.
Kitasuna Little League is the defending Little League World Series champion. They will participate in a tournament at Brett Field
tonight, Friday and Saturday.
Little Mountain has had three teams advance
to the Little League World Series. The 1953
team (Jaycee Nationals) earned a place through
the Northwest United States play-downs.
In 2010, Little Mountain won the Canadian
Championships that punched a ticket to
Williamsport. The Little Mountain Challenger
Team was invited and attended Williamsport,
being the first International Challenger entry
at the Little League World Series.
Over the past six years the tournament has
gained local, regional and national attention
-- not only because of the international teams
playing, but also for the local teams that
participate in it as well. According to former
El Segundo High School baseball standout and
tournament director Ryan Lopez, this year’s
event will be the most competitive with some
of the best teams from Southern California
entered. Kitasuna will be gunning for its sixth
tournament championship in seven tries and
has the talent to do it.
Fourteen local Southern California teams will
participate in the cross-cultural tournament. It
is designed to provide local baseball athletes
with an opportunity to gain global experience
by meeting and competing against dynamic
coaching organizations and disciplined teams.
Ultimately it brings a very unique perspective
to the type of training, fitness and teamwork
put in by these international teams.
Besides the two international teams, Beach
City Academy has four teams entered. Ryan
Lopez is coaching a Beach City Academy team
that includes El Segundo’s Dylan Immel, Brett
Abitante, Carson Brooks and Lucas Bonham.
Alberto Concepcion, a former catcher in the
Boston Red Sox organization, is coaching the
Rancho Grande roster. Joel Weeks is the skipper
for the BC Red and BC Blue teams. The LA
Xtreme is a highly competitive team from
Westchester, while the Saddleback Cowboys will
represent South Orange County. The Patriots
are from baseball-rich Simi Valley. The Horned
Frogs are from Sherman Oaks -- another hotbed
for baseball. The California Baseball Academy
is an unaffiliated team with plenty of talent.
The other two teams have a local flavor that
includes the Redondo Sunset Little League
and the Manhattan Beach Heaters club team.
Michael Alcala coaches the El Segundo
Little League’s Big Dawgs. The roster is filled
with talent and they’re looking forward to the
competition. Landon Davis, Luc Giroux, Mateo
Heredia, Benji Kerin, Timmy Klug, Dominick
Kopecky, Nik Kvitek, Zack Porat, Conner
Ramirez, Caleb Smith, Griffin Whitener, Will
Kerker, James Baldino and Evan Sherrill fill
out the roster for the Big Dawgs.
Coach Alcala says that this tournament gives
his team the opportunity to compete with
athletes they normally play against during the
season. He adds that it’s also a bonding time
since they’ll be spending more time at the field
watching and hanging out with some of the
best players from all over Southern California
-- but especially from Japan and Canada.
Murad helped both international teams with
their sightseeing this week that included going to
Disneyland one day and to one of the Freeway
Series games at Dodger Stadium this past
Tuesday. The Kitasuna team was introduced as
the Little League World Series champions and
met both the Dodgers and Angels on the field.
Murad said, “We are thrilled to be able to
continue this support through this sponsorship
and support. We are excited to give another
group of 30 children, who otherwise would not
be able participate, the opportunity to come to
Los Angeles and have an experience that we
hope will change their lives while uniting the
global community.”
Come out and support these players and
watch some of the best baseball outside of
Dodger Stadium. Tonight there is a doubleheader
starting at 5 p.m. when the Canadian team
faces El Segundo’s Big Dawgs. At 7 p.m., BC
Prospects face Kitasuna. On Friday morning at
9 a.m., BC Surf Blue and JC Nationals face
off. Then at 11:30 a.m., BC Surf Blue plays
the Big Dawgs.
If you’d like to follow the defending World
Series champions, the Kitasuna team faces the
Horned Frogs from Sherman Oaks at 2 p.m. at
Marine Field (1751 Marine Ave. in Manhattan
Beach). At 4:30 p.m., Kitasuna will take on
Redondo Sunset at the same venue.
On Saturday, all games will be single
elimination leading up to the championship
game at 7:15 p.m. Of course if you get
hungry, the snack bar -- led by Staci Sperber-
McEwan’s vast menu items both days at
Brett Field -- should satisfy any hungry
person’s appetite. •
provide transparency for wait-listed families.”
Johnstone, who in the past has advocated
beefing up the District’s CDC programs,
in fear of losing students to neighboring
school districts with more robust child care
opportunities, said the Wiseburn parents are
willing to pay the freight for a dynamic Child
Care program – but that they need to be able
to get their children into the program and not
be stuck on a wait list.
Johnstone estimated that the current wait
list district-wide is “about 100 kids.” Part of
Wiseburn’s bond ask that will face the voters
this June is an expansion of the CDC capabilities
and facilities.
During the action item portion of the
105-minute meeting, the Board approved a
resolution calling for support of California
Assembly Bill 2808, sponsored by Assemblyman
Al Murastachi. If passed, the legislation should
garner the District more funding from the state
in concert with implementation of the now
mandated Local Control Funding Formula.
The Board also agreed to the ongoing
construction change orders for both phases of the
Wiseburn High School Project. Johnstone said,
“We should be able to get through everything
without any other drama.”
Director of Facilities Planning Vince Madsen,
during his brief comments, said, “We have had
a lot of good dialogue with the City [of El
Segundo}.” Post-meeting, Madsen emailed that
“the City, District and construction management
team had a good week” working through
construction challenges.” He noted that recent
rainfall doesn’t help the progress of Phase II
moving forward, but that “it was encouraging
to get everyone’s priorities on the same page.”
Phase II is still tracking for a late August/early
September finish date, but all involved are
working to “tighten up the schedule.”
The District begins spring break tomorrow
on Good Friday and will resume classroom
instruction on Monday, April 9, with the next
regularly scheduled School Board meeting
slated for April 12. •
