Eagles from page 6
Though the Eagles began the season with
a loss, the future looks great with two new
players that showed their potential. Freshman
second baseman Bella Gridley had three hits,
and sophomore starting pitcher Bailey Gertsch
held a tough Saxon lineup to just five hits.
The Eagles faced Chavez in a first-round
tournament game and came away with a 5-1
victory over the City Section power. In the
third inning, Kelly Carignan singled, and
Katie Croxall walked. Gridley’s RBI single
scored Carignan and Sophia Marrero’s tworun
double scored Croxall and Gridley. In the
fourth inning Leah Abitante and Croxall each
had RBI singles and the Eagles won 5-1.
El Segundo couldn’t put together much
offense against Mary Star and fell 3-1. Mary
Star took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning
and extended the lead to 3-0 in the third
inning. The Eagles, who were held to just
three hits, scored their only run in the sixth
inning when Abitante walked and scored on
a double by Sophia Marrero.
El Segundo’s pitching limited Mary Star
to just two hits, but two of the four walks
scored. Avery Chavez, just a freshman, started
and gave up all three runs (one earned) on
two hits. Bailey Gertsch finished up getting
eight straight outs, including four strike outs.
