The Grey took the first half lead thanks to
Alex Rubin off an assist from William Long and
a goal from Spencer Osborne off an assist from
Rubin. The 2-0 score held up early into the second
half when Zach Patterson’s goal from another
pass from Rubin to give the Greys a 3-0 lead.
The Blue’s Connor Hitzig found an opening and
blasted a shot past Grey goalie Aiden Smith.
Midway through the second half Grey’s forward
Byron Garcia scored when he pushed one by
Blue’s goalie Zach Cauble to make it 4-1.
In the last six minutes in regulation the
Blues frantic play tied the score. Ryan Sowder
took a pass and broke away and scored to
make it 4-2. Hitzig teamed up with Sowder
for another goal to tighten the game 4-3 with
5:00 remaining. With the frantic pace of play
down the stretch Brendan Wilson found Hitzig
open near the net and Hitzig’s goal with 1:03
in regulation tied the game. In overtime Spencer
Osborne used some passing skills to feed
Zach Patterson who scored giving the Greys
an exciting 5-4 win and the championship.
High School Sports
The El Segundo high school’s boys’ soccer
team won their second consecutive Ocean
League title. The two time defending CIF
champions were left out of this year’s playoffs
because of technical issues. Still, the Eagles
had a great season and finished their first
season in Division 1 with a 13-7-1 record
including 9-1 in Ocean League play.
The girls’ basketball team finished their
season when they were knocked off by
Laguna Hills 48-47 in the second round of the
CIF Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs.
The Lady Eagles had advanced to the second
round after defeating highly touted La Serna
46-34 in the first round. It was the second
consecutive season the Lady Eagles finished
with a 21-9 record.
The baseball team opened their season by
hosting Redondo but fell 5-0 to one of the
