Aging Mastery Program at
the Hawthorne Library
Throughout the months of November and
December, the Hawthorne Library is hosting
Aging Mastery classes for older adults. The
National Council on Aging created the Aging
Mastery program. It features presentations
on topics such as healthy eating, medication
management, and financial planning. “We were
asked to be the pilot library for this new program
most likely because we have held quite
a few health programs in the past,” says Scott
Willis, Adult Services Librarian at the Hawthorne
Library. “One of our goals is to have
more resources specifically for seniors, so we
were quite interested in participating.” There
will be a total of 10 presentations, held at 11
a.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays until Dec.
11. For more information, call 310-679-8193.
Dulce’s Thoughts
Do the holidays seem to be getting celebrated
earlier every year?
At this point in November, families start
preparing for Thanksgiving—and for some, it’s
Black Friday that they are getting more excited
about. However, as the holiday season slowly
approaches and the weather begins to change,
more and more Christmas decorations seem to
be filling up the streets of Hawthorne. Whether
someone celebrates Hanukkah or Christmas,
it is easy to observe that the decorations have
been up since the start of November. Many
storefronts in Hawthorne have displays of
different holiday ornaments and knickknacks.
You also can’t miss the plethora of movie
marathons on television all about being with
your family and cherishing this time of year.
I am not saying this is a bad thing, but it does
make me realize how fast time passes us by.
I’m thrilled to see how everyone celebrates
during such a beautiful time of the year. It
seems like yesterday was the start of a new
year. Now that 2019 is coming to an end, it’s
important to take a break and reflect on all
the good that happened in 2019. Enjoy this
time, your time, now before the year is over! •
Huber’s Hiccups
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
Okay, I got lazy last week and
didn’t feel like sharing my life with
you. Did you miss me? I missed
all 12 of you loyal readers who
have stuck with me through thick and thin,
ups and downs, heat waves, wind storms and
power shut downs. Just when we thought
the fire season was over, we have another
wind event this week to shut off power to
thousands. Anyway, I want to share a blog
post that I wrote for my company recently.
It’s an interesting and unique company that
God has given to me to own and operate.
This is our selling season. It’s fun to talk
with customers from all parts of the country
and even some from other countries. The
blog post that follows is basically the reason
we are in business. Remember to relax,
have a cold one and enjoy getting ready
for Thanksgiving next week. God loves
you a lot and that is something worth being
thankful for.
Why Display a Nativity
in Your Front Yard?
It’s the time of the year when the leaves
start falling, the weather gets chilly, and the
Christmas stuff is actually being purchased
after sitting in the stores for the last couple
of months. Homeowners across America
will soon be thinking about decorating their
houses for the big daddy of all holidays,
Christmas. Young people and especially us
older folks are looking to keep things light
and easy. We really don’t want to spend
days or maybe a week dragging boxes out
of the garage or attic, testing strings of lights,
and setting up Santas and candy canes.
There is nothing wrong with an occasional
snowman or a Mickey Mouse,
but if we really want to celebrate the
true meaning of Christmas, we should
set up a nativity to remind us of whose
birthday it is and how Jesus brings us
joy during this season and throughout
the year.
Displaying a nativity sends a message.
We make a statement. We are saying to the
world that we believe this baby is the Savior
of the world, the Son of God. We believe
that this little baby born in a lowly manger
and wrapped in swaddling cloths came to die
for the sins of the entire world. Those who
put their trust in Him have eternal life given
to them.
If there was ever a history changing event,
the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem ranks right
up there with the big ones. Why do we fly
our American flag? Because we want the
world to know that we love this country. Why
should we display a nativity? Because we
want the world to know that we put our trust
in the One who saves us. We want others to
experience the same joy and peace that we
have in Jesus.
Shout it from the mountain tops. Show the
world, show your neighborhood, tell everyone
about this baby born 2,000 years ago in a
distant place who reigns today in the hearts
and lives of those who believe.
Christmas lights on the house? Sure. Keep
it simple. Make a statement. Display the
REAL Christmas story. Share Jesus.

Store and believes that God loves the world
