cakepops, chocolate covered strawberries,
and much more! I became lucky enough to
get to know Carla and the behind the scenes
of her art.
The Start of her Business
Q: What do you do in your business?
A: My business is pretty much self-explanatory
haha! I am a self-taught baker as well
as home based! I make custom cakes and
treats/sweets! Big, little, medium, all kinds of
cakes! I also specialize in chocolate covered
strawberries and make others like cake-pops,
cakesicles, and other deserts!
Q: Describe the process of starting your
business?
A: I got the creativity from my mom. My
whole journey, I enjoyed simply creating
things with my hands, whether it be arts and
crafts or cakes. I used to bake a lot as a little
girl, however, because of high school, I got
extremely busy. To add, I helped my mom
decorate family parties and candy tables! I
loved creating party decors for others on their
special day! It became a hobby of mine for a
long time, but the amount of workload from
school made that joy of mine fade away.
Finally, I started baking more and more once
I began college. I regularly came home from
school and out of nowhere I baked a random
cake for my family. All my close relatives
and friends started asking me to make cakes

Intro
Hi Hawthorne! As of lately, I have been
seeing many small businesses growing on
social media, especially in the black and
brown community. The last two businesses I
talked seemed to not only benefit the owners
but also develop more representation in the
People of Color Community. Because I love
representation so much, I interviewed another
business owner who I been noticing all over
my social media! I have a feeling you will
like her since she is very sweet!
Who is Sweets by Carla?
Carla Mosquero is a 19-year-old Colombian
– American who started her custom
cake business, Sweets by Carla. Although
she grew up the first childhood years in
Inglewood, she as well spent the rest of her
youth as a resident in Hawthorne. Her parents
both migrated in the U.S. from Bogota,
Colombia, making her a first generation in
her family. She claims that she grew up
happily in Hawthorne, seeing the strong representation
of the Latinx community, having
Colombian family and friends, and the joy of
being surrounded by culture daily. As of right
now, she is a second-year Human Biology
and Society student at UCLA, but is also
taking advantage of quarantine by baking

Neil Goldman: 1) COVID-19 today;
2) Managing Change tomorrow. How we
work in the world—indeed, how the world
works—is forever changing. The Coronavirus
has further spurred reinvention, with remote
work (and school), more reliance on Zoom,
technology and digital tools, fluid schedules,
and the continuing need to adapt. We must
continue to evolve to ensure our schools remain
relevant, as the pace of change is only
accelerating. Consider:
“The greatest danger in times of turbulence
is not the turbulence – it is to act with
yesterday’s logic.” – Peter Drucker
“It’s not the strongest that survive, nor the
most intelligent, but the one most adaptable
to change.” – Charles Darwin
Our board role is in part to drive vision and
innovation. We all must be open to change,
regularly adapt accordingly, and continue to
find ways to support our students, educators,
and community members in the process. Thank
you. VoteGoldmanWUSD.com.
Jessica Daugherty: The most essential
issue to address in the WUSD is to improve
District communication with the community
and community engagement with the District.
Parents, students, teachers, staff, and taxpayers
must have communication channels through
which they can communicate with the District
and visa-versa. The pandemic has increased
communication and equity gaps for families
that are less technologically connected. Improved
communication must also include
improving communication and collaboration
with Da Vinci Schools in order to better
articulate programming from middle school
into high school.
Second, we must identify a financially stable
way to expand access to early childhood
education and childcare in order to meet community
demand. This includes immediately
opening the CDC to provide families with
support during the pandemic. Many districts
have opened their child development centers
with the CDC-mandated 10-1 ratio. Families
need childcare right now more than ever and
our District has not prioritized it. •

for their birthdays and that’s basically how
I got the idea. At first, I became hesitant of
my idea, but it eventually grew on me. I
finally decided to make a risk and start when
my mom bought me my kitchen aid mixer
for my birthday! I was so happy and spent
so many days baking. What I find funny is
how much I wanted to start my business
but how scared I became! So much so that
I created my Instagram page but did not
tell anyone except two friends for a whole
month. After processing a month, I changed
my page to public and shared the news on
my personal page! I am still surprised on
how fast my business grew, but as well as
the infinite support.
The Ups and Downs
of Her Business
Q: What hardships have you experienced
with your business? Have you improved?
A: Yes definitely. I’ve had trouble in
handling everything myself! I feel like it’s
much more difficult than working a job
and coming home after your shift because
it’s like I always must be doing something
related to my business. Whether it’s making
cakes/strawberry orders, answering inquires/
messages, buying supplies, or writing
down/keeping track of everything. On top
of that, I am a full time pre-med student,
thus, my classes are highly demanding!
Time management has been something I’ve
improved and I am still in the process of
doing better every day!
Regarding the quality of my work, I’ve
improved so much! I know a lot more techniques
now and I feel like my work speaks
for itself. I always try my absolute best in
weighing every order and I love the results!
Although I’ve been running my business for
two months, the comparison from my then
photos to now, you can tell I’ve improved!
Q: Do you think Covid-19 is the reason
why you initiated in your business?
A: I believe that Covid-19 is a big reason
why I started my business. The pandemic
made me come back home from college. If
it wasn’t for Covid-19 making me move back
to Hawthorne, I would have never started my
business. This pandemic has been horrible
and I never thought I would see a bright side,
but it paved the way for me to work from
home. If I had not come back, I wouldn’t
have found the time to do what I do now!
How Her Business
Made Her Grow
Q: What did you learn from taking that
one step to your platform now?
A: It sounds naïve, but I never thought this
would be so difficult and tedious. It is a handful
and will require a big part of your life. I
