Stay True to
Your Values
Life has changed in the last
year. Life has changed from five
years ago, certainly life in America
is not the same as it was twenty
years ago. Life is always changing,
sometimes more dramatic than at other
times. Do we change with it? Do we simply
“go with the flow”. What if this change is
not good? Some of us want to turn back the
clock and go back to the “good ol’ days”.
Back in the day, we didn’t have to deal with
social distancing, wearing masks, or being
politically correct. We didn’t have to watch
what we said and whom we said it in front
of. We could tell a joke to the opposite sex
and not have to worry about being fired. We
could even forward a humorous email that
made everyone laugh. All of that stuff is
change and I can deal with that. What I have
trouble with is when the values we hold near
and dear are being thrown out and trampled on
by court decisions, social media, anti-family,
anti-America groups. Call me old fashioned,
call me stuck in the past, call me patriotic,
call me a redneck, old geezer. I think that
the values our parents taught us are still valid
today, like showing respect to one another
and authority. Like protecting the
nuclear family from attacks. Like
going to church and worshipping
the one true God. Like talking to
and sharing a cold one with our
neighbors. Like taking out a book
and reading it instead of looking at
our phones all evening. COVID has
made us less social. We are meant
to be social. We are meant to rely
on each other for social interaction.
We all have a choice. We can shut down and
stay quarantined in our little world, or we can
get out there and live. If we truly value our
families, if we value our faith, if we value our
community and country then we will do all we
can to protect and promote these values. When
we feel overwhelmed by it all, we can turn
to scripture for reassurance. Proverbs 3:5-6
says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him and he
will make strait your paths.” Dear friends, we
cannot change our world. The things of the
world are of this world. What we can do is
put our trust in the God who created us and
every living thing. Yes, we should fight to keep
our values and instill these values in our kids
and grandkids. But, the bigger battle has been
won. God, in Jesus, has overcome the things
of this world. Relax people, relax knowing
that God has us in his hands. Did I mention
