the US Census Bureau to the National
Archives and Records Administration. Most
of these records will not be shared with
the public until 72 years after it has been
collected. Federal law restricts data that
identifies any specific individual. In other
words, you can rest assured that your responses
will not be shared. At least, not
for a very, very long time. We, at the city
of Hawthorne, encourage you to respond
to this year’s census, as well as to remind
your family and friends if they haven’t
already responded. Your response will greatly
help serve our community by ensuring we
receive the federal support needed to support
our residents. At the time of writing this
article, our city is at a 59.7% response rate,
while our national average is at 62.6%. We
will need every resident we can get so we
ask you to join us in our mission to better
our community!
For more either more information about the
census or to give your response, go online
to www.census.gov. Remember to follow
our Instagram if you would like to stay up
to date with Census information that we
will be providing our followers (search @
cityofhawthorneca at www.instagram.com or
download the Instagram app via your phones
application store).
My Thoughts
A year ago, I remember not even caring
about topics like the Census or voting. I
thought it wasn’t worth my time. However,
I am happy to say that I met some people
at my school, Santa Monica College, who
encouraged me to read more about politics
and our government. Thus, after learning
about the importance of the Census, I now
encourage others to respond. What caught my
attention the most is the amount of funds that
each jurisdiction receives based on just the
responses of residents. I thought about how
these funds can help schools receive better
lunch programs, more textbooks, or even better
technology/equipment! I remember attending
Hawthorne Math and Science Academy,
where most of the clubs were science and
math based, and seeing the materials we had
to our disposal. I would like to share this
experience of having educational materials
with all schools in our community. I feel like
if everyone wants to see a positive change
in Hawthorne, then we must take the first
step by simply responding to this year’s US
Census. If we all work together on this today,
we will see a greater Hawthorne tomorrow!
Below you will see a flyer that I made about
the Census for Hawthorne.
