Hawthorne Farmers Insurance Serves
Lunch to the Hawthorne Police Department
The Hawthorne Police Department couldn’t be more grateful for the Hawthorne Farmers Insurance’s act of kindness. They donated over 40 boxed lunches from Panera. Also, thank you to the Hawthorne Kiwanis Club for stopping by to deliver the food. Photo courtesy

Intro
Hi Hawthorne! My name is Samantha
Schmidt and I am back again with another
article. However, this time I will be talking
a little bit about our current US Census.
To those who do not know, the Census is
a questionnaire form that comes every 10
years and asks you generic questions
about yourself and your household. For
example, it asks about your gender, race, the
number of people living in your home, and
some other general questions. Responding
is easy and only takes about 5 minutes of
your time. What many people tend to ask is
“Does the Census even benefit me?” We can
confidently say that it does! I’d like to break
it down as to why the Census is important.
To put it in short terms, the 2020 Census
ensures that your community receives funds
for public services, schools, fire departments,
and several other resources you or
your family may use. The Census can also
help with planning and development of new
homes and businesses as well as improving
your neighborhood. Finally, the Census can
determine how your locality is represented in
our state. These representatives can help you
get your voice heard by introducing legislative
bills, working with other communities, and
offering amendments. If you didn’t know,
California has the largest representation with
53 representatives!
Myths About the Census
Although the Census sounds like an amazing
way to improve our Hawthorne community,
there is one problem: there is a good
amount of people who don’t end up responding.
This means less federal funding to
improve our city’s resources and infrastructure
through our public services and government
contracts. In addition, several rumors
have been going around in regards to the
Census, but don’t worry since I will clear
these up!
The most popular rumor that people think
is regarding whether or not you have to
be a US citizen to respond. I am here to
tell you that the 2020 US Census does not
question your status of citizenship, nor do
you have to be a US citizen to respond. The
US Census was developed at the founding
of this country to count every human being
living in the United States in order for
our leaders to make the best resource and
financial decisions for our communities as a
whole. This means that responses of specific
individuals is mostly not a priority. This
brings me on to the next question: Does
the Census keep your responses confidential?
I’m happy to say that this is true!
All of your answers in the US Census
form will remain confidential! Many of you
may not know that most of these records
that the Census collects are transferred from
