Fathers Day is this Sunday. This
year, I will be enjoying my day with
my two son-in-laws, my grandson,
and other extended family members
on our men-only, week-long, annual
fishing trip up at Florence Lake in
the High Sierra Mountains. We love the remoteness
of “our lake” which keeps visitors to
a minimum. This special spot on God’s great
earth is located at the end of a winding, mostly
one-lane-wide road that Southern California
Edison built ninety years ago. Florence Lake
is one of several reservoirs built to generate
electrical power and send it down to the Los
Angeles Basin. Other lakes that comprise the Big
Creek Project include Shaver, Huntington and
Edison. We have been meeting up at Florence
since 1990. We have watched our sons grow
up there and now it’s the grandsons’ turn to
explore the great outdoors. There is something
special about the relationship of a father and
his children. Mothers are expected to be the
loving parent in God plan for family. It seems
like fathers have to make the choice of being
the “father figure”. What does that mean? Of
course there are many fathers who choose not
to be involved at all. Some just leave the job
up to mom to raise the kids. Fatherhood is not
easy. You really want your children to grow up
to be solid, God-fearing adults. But,
there are times when tough love is
hard to dish out. The challenge is
to discipline a child when discipline
is needed. Other times listening and
understanding and communicating
is all that is needed. Kids these
days face worldly problems and
peer pressure that many of us never
encountered until much later in life.
Kids are being forced to grow up way
too early. With technology everywhere, the
world enters into our kids lives at an early age.
Of course, the greatest example we have of
fatherly love is our heavenly father. God cares
for us. God loves us. But, he disciplines us also.
He wants nothing but the best for us, not necessarily
what we think would be good for us.
Our heavenly father is always there, not just
when we need him. Earthly fathers should look
at our families and our responsibilities as gifts
to us. We should take the lead in leading our
families. We start by loving our wives and when
our children see that we love each other, then
they can see a great example of what love is.
Honor your father and mother is one of the ten
commandments. Honor is given to us when we
are doing the right thing and leading, loving,
and caring for our wives and children. Happy
Fathers Day! I’ll be gone fishing next week,
so you are on your own for the next couple of
weeks. Remember: relax and have a cold one,
stay hydrated, stay cool and love your family!
