Brissa’s Thoughts
Hello fellow residents of Hawthorne! It
is my pleasure to be your new Hawthorne
Hotspot writer! I’d like to take this opportunity
to introduce myself. My name is
Brissa Medina and I am 22 years of age. I
am currently enrolled in my last semester at
Santa Monica College and will be graduating
with an Associate’s degree in Political
Science, after which I will be transferring.
Once I receive my Bachelor’s degree, I plan
on taking a year off to focus on some intense
and disciplined studying towards the LSAT
Exam! I am aware that it won’t be a piece of
cake, but I will work hard! I’d love to attend
either New York Law School or Columbia
University. New York has always been a dream
city for me; I’ve always wanted to visit for
various reasons. Among the top would be my
love for Salsa! New York in the 70s was one
of the best places to be for salsa enthusiasts
and that’s still true today! I am also a huge
fan of John F. Kennedy Jr. and his free spirit,
which he exhibited all over New York in the
80s and 90s. He even attended New York Law
School, which is my top school! It would
truly be a dream come true to study law in
New York. My past doesn’t consist of a lot
of success due to unfortunate circumstances
in my life, but I have learned that everything
is possible with enough effort and desire. I
am not where I want to be but I have come
a long way and I am absolutely excited for
what is yet to come. I greatly look forward
to working with you, Hawthorne! •

Non-Virus News
For all of you who are self-quarantining,
I bring you good news, many
of us are still alive and well and going
about our daily work. Life as we know
it has not ended. We all have heard about
this virus thing, so let’s move on to some
other conversation, like tax season. Every
American wage earner is required to report to
the federal and state government their earned
income and based on how much we earned
the government tells us how much we owe.
We pay taxes and entrust our government to
provide for us a safe nation, safe cities, safe
schools, safe parks, safe streets, clean drinking
water, well maintained roadways, along
with providing social assistance programs to
assist people who need assistance. We may
not like how our money is sometimes wasted,
we may not agree with our elected officials,
but we live in the safest, most economically
blessed country in the world. We have our
problems, we have our homeless, we have
our trash, we have bad air days, but where
else can you find the opportunities that are
available to such a high percentage of a widely
diverse population? America is blessed.
We the citizens are blessed. I believe the
American dream is still alive and well. If
a young person of any ethnic background
gets an education, takes responsibility for
their actions, works hard to achieve, they
can live out their dreams. The only road
blocks that may impede their success are
the barriers that are self imposed.
Okay, tell me I’m patriotic, tell me
I’m old school, tell me I’m living in
the past, tell me I don’t know what
I’m talking about. Yes, if I’m a 6
foot tall, white guy who can’t jump,
then I will not make the NBA. But,
given the talent or skill or brains that
God has given to me, I can find a job that I
enjoy, I can save money, I can strive to be the
best I can be. If I find a door locked, then I
keep knocking on other doors until one opens
for me. No matter how long the panic and
hysteria over the virus lasts, America is the
best place to be. I hear Corona beer sales
are down. That is silly. Go buy a case,
have a cold one each of the next 12 days,
God is in control, we will get through this
together, pay your taxes, relax, life goes on.
God bless America!
Gender Revealed
We had a good time last Saturday. The
other 29 people present at my daughter and
son-in-law’s gender reveal party had never
been to a gender reveal party before either.
So, I didn’t feel too out of place. The suspense
was in the air, or at least in the big, black,
balloon that contained the colored confetti that
would reveal the gender. The future daddy
popped the balloon at just the right time to
reveal a blue color. Unbeknownst to the rest
of us, neither my daughter, nor Paul knew the
gender until that balloon bursting moment.
They had received sealed envelopes from
their doctor and had given one envelope to
the balloon blower upper at Party City, and
