National Night of Prayer
this Thursday Night
The Hawthorne/Lawndale Ministerial
Association invites you to attend their
annual National Day of Prayer Service on
Thursday, May 3 at the South Bay Celebration
Assembly beginning at 7 p.m. The theme for
the service this year is Unity in faith based on
Ephesians 4:3: “Make every effort to keep the
unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
Hawthorne 5K Run and
Health Fair
Time to get in shape. It’s time to get the
running shoes out, run in the Hawthorne 5K
Run, and then attend the Health Fair that will
be held over at the Hawthorne High School
track on Saturday, May 12. Each year many of
the students enrolled in our Hawthorne schools
run for credit or for the health of it and they
invite their parents to run with them. Mayor
Vargas and Mayor Pro Temp Awad were seen
sprinting around the course last year. There
are no hills, no real obstacles to impede your
progress, it’s just a fun time to walk, run, or
crawl the 3+ miles to stay in shape.
Hall of Fame Banquet
The Hawthorne Historical Society will be
holding their fourth Hawthorne Hall of Fame
Banquet on Saturday, May 19th at 6 pm at the
Ayres Hotel located at 14400 Hindry Avenue
in Hawthorne. The class of 2018 inductees
include: Joe Contestabile, The Hawthorne
Kiwanis Club, Phillips Plumbing and Heating,
Chet Pipkin, and Emitt Rhodes. The MC
for the evening’s program will be Christina
Pascucci, KTLA anchor. It looks like another
great event for the residents of Hawthorne to
celebrate the accomplishments of some great
people and organizations. For more information:

Nine Years
Has it been that long? It’s been
close to nine years that I have had the
privilege and honor to represent you,
the fine people of Hawthorne, as your
City Clerk. There have been ups and
downs along the way. During my
tenure, I have served under four
distinctly different mayors. Mayors Guidi,
Juarez, Brown, and now Vargas all have had
their individual styles of running the city council
meetings and conducting business. Back
in 2009 I really didn’t know what I was getting
into. I campaigned on the motto: “Independent
Leadership”. I have a stack of old campaign
signs in my garage with that verbiage. Let me
know if you would like one. No elected official
can really be totally independent. We must work
together, listen to one another, compromise on
some issues, and move forward for the benefit
of those whom we serve. Isn’t that true for
everyone? We can’t live our lives being totally
independent. The more we accept one another
and work together, the more enjoyment we have
in life. We are all in this together. Just because
you might like one brand of cold ones and I
like another, or worse yet, you may not like
cold ones at all, that doesn’t mean I hate you.
Just because I like blonde beer and you like
your refreshments dark, doesn’t mean we can’t
get along. Forget the battle to be better than
others. Forget this idea that you are always
right. Just drink whatever you want and I’ll
drink what I want. I love you, my 16 readers,
regardless. Less stress, more cold ones, that’s
the key to living a long, enjoyable life.
