Free CERT Training in Inglewood
The County of Los Angeles Fire Department
and The City of Inglewood Office of
Emergency Services is proud to present
C.E.R.T. training to the public. Following
a major disaster, police, fire, and medical
professionals may not be able to fully meet
the initial demand of the community. People
will have to rely on each other to meet the
immediate life-saving and life sustaining
needs, particularly in isolated neighborhoods
that may be cut off from the main roads for
a period of time. The County of Los Angeles
Fire Department’s Community Emergency
Response Team (C.E.R.T.) program was
developed to provide basic training in safety
and life-saving skills for the general public.
The training course will be presented as a
series of three consecutive Saturday classes.
Scheduled class dates are on June 9 (topics
will include Disaster Preparedness, Disaster
Fire Suppression and Disaster Medical
Operations I); June 16 (Disaster Medical
Operations II, Light Search & Rescue, and
Team Organization); and June 23 (Terrorism,
Disaster Psychology, and Review/Stimulation).
Classes will take place at Inglewood City
Hall in the Community Room on the first
floor, 1 Manchester Blvd. Classes are free. To
enroll, contact the City of Inglewood Office
of Emergency Services at 310-412-8840, or
email oes@cityofinglewood.org. Participants
are required to wear closed toed shoes and
long pants. All students must be at least
18 to participate, though those ages 16 and
over may attend if accompanied by a parent.
Students must complete all 20 hours of the
course to receive a certificate of completion.

At-Risk Youth to Receive
Violence Intervention Services
Approximately 100 Inglewood area youth
ages 14 to 18 will receive violence intervention
services through a coalition of agencies
led by the South Bay Workforce Investment
Board (SBWIB) and funded by a $500,000
state grant from the California Violence
Intervention Project. The Inglewood Community
and Regional Engagement Violence
Intervention Prevention (I-CARE VIP) Project,
comprised of representatives from the City
of Inglewood, Inglewood Police Department,
Inglewood Unified School District and the
SBWIB, will provide a systematic pathway
for diversion and employment opportunities
for the youth.
“Through this education and training
program, youth will have the tools they
need to focus on academics and gain skills
for employment,” commented Inglewood
Mayor James T. Butts, Jr. The SBWIB and
Centinela Youth Services (CYS) will partner
to provide trauma-informed case management
while the youth are improving their labor
marketability through paid pre-employment
training, paid work experience and job search
assistance. CYS will also provide its highly
effective diversion services, which includes
a community empowerment model, mental
health diversion, Families Able to Resolve
Situations mediation, Victim Offender Restitution
mediation and Everychild Restorative
Justice Center case management.
“We are very excited to continue serving
Inglewood’s youth through I-CARE and
support their career pathway and educational
development,” noted SBWIB Executive Director
Jan Vogel.
The stated goal of the I-CARE program
is “to reduce risk factors that contribute to
gang-related crime and violence. This is
done through law enforcement and services
provided by the City of Inglewood, schools
and community partners.”

El Camino College to Receive
Career Development Grant
El Camino College will receive funding
from a California Economic Development
Department (EDD) grant awarded to the
South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB)
to develop and provide CNC Machine
Operator career development programs for
people with disabilities in partnership with
the Uniquely Abled Project.
The $350,000 Disability Employment

assistance transitioning into employment.
Employer partners committed to providing
the work-based learning opportunities include

on-the-job training, transitional jobs and
work experience. The strategies will enable
businesses to customize skills training for
people with disabilities that can lead to employment,
career advancement and economic
independence.
SBWIB has also partnered with the Department
of Rehabilitation, the Employment
Development Department/Wagner-Peyser,
and The Arc-South Bay to ensure that both
the participant and employers have all the
resources to make the work-based learning
opportunity a positive experience. All the
partners will also be engaged through the
“Mentored” coaching and training digital
platform to deliver “Blueprint for Workplace
Success” training and provide support and
case management on demand for both the
