Girls Soccer Team
Gaining Momentum
The Eagles started slowly to begin their
season, but with wins over Inglewood 16-0
and Peninsula 2-0, they evened their season
record to 3-3-1, heading into the South Torrance
Tournament.
The Inglewood game was as lopsided as
the score might indicate; only they could’ve
scored thirty goals. Head coach Skip Jones
removed his starters early on, and in the
second half, the offense essentially played
keep away the last 25 minutes of the half.
It was a classy move not to embarrass an
obviously overmatched Sentinel team further.
In all 11 different players scored for the
Eagles, El Segundo scored nine first-half
goals and scored seven goals in the first ten
minutes of the second half. Barcelona Heredia,
Charlie Gerson, Holly Wilbanks, Shelby
Lyon, and Bella Munoz each scored two goals
apiece. Tanner Ijams, Ciara Doggett, Audrey
Cdebaca, Jaden Fode, Annika Klishnevich
and Sarah Bedoyan scored one goal apiece.
El Segundo faced better opposition when
they played host to Peninsula, and the Eagle
defeated the Panthers 2-0. On a cold rainy
day, the Eagles used some fancy footwork and
played great defense. Jaden Fode’s first-half
goal off a direct rebound gave her team a
1-0. In the second half, Chelsie Charles took
a corner kick pass and rifled it in for the
Eagle’s second goal, and held on for the win.
In the South Torrance Holiday Tournament,
the Eagles defeated Cajon 3-1 in the opener.
Chelsie Charles scored a first-half goal to give
her team a 1-0 lead. In the second half, her
goal midway through gave her a team a 2-1
lead. Jaden Fode scored her fifth goal of the
year to complete the scoring for El Segundo.
The defense was once again disruptive, and
Nila Kovacs had four saves. In the game
against Torrance, the Eagles scored twice
in the first half after surrendering a goal
to the Tartars; then held on for a 2-1 win.
They played Santa Monica on Monday in
the consolation final and looked to improve
on their five-game win streak.
Lady Eagles Showing
Their Potential
Head girl’s basketball coach Terrence
Wilson wasn’t discouraged when his team
started the season with a lackluster 1-7
record. Since then, they’ve gone 4-1 with
their only loss to eighth-ranked Culver City
55-42. It was a game that was closer than
the final score indicated. In their final game
before Christmas, the Eagles took care of
Da-Vinci 48-35.
Coach Wilson says his team is playing
better both offensively and rebounding on
the other end. “Our passing to find the open
shooter is paying off, and Tina (Tsukahira)
and Bo (Takehara) are making their shots.
Nicole (Ungaro) is controlling the rebounding
on both ends, and the team overall is finding
out they have potential to be successful.”

Next week the Eagles (5-8) play in the North
Torrance Tournament. They open with Yorba
Linda (3-8) in the first game that is slated to
start at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 27.

Eagles Say Good-bye to Athletic
Trainer Katie Ostrovecky
The El Segundo athletic department has
been in good hands when it comes to injured
athletes. That’s because of the head athletic
trainer, Katie Ostrovecky, who has been in
charge for six years. She has overseen athletes
with broken bones, severe bruises, sprains,
muscle spasms, leg cramps, concussions and
more. Through all of her dedication to getting
her patient athletes back on the field of
play, she has made everlasting friendships.
Katie is relocating to Arizona for another
job opportunity.
The Eagle family said a tearful goodbye in
a gathering emceed by former teacher Dana
Lund. He helped organize the gathering of
athletes and coaches from the high school.
Each athletic program presented Katie with a
special gift before she said goodbye. “When
I came here six years ago, I was new to the
area and had no family here. This high school
and this community embraced me, and you
made me feel like part of your family.”
Katie will surely be missed for her attentiveness
to the athletes but, more importantly,
for the friendships she has made. Thank you,
Katie, for all you have done for the athletes
and for your friendship on behalf of a grateful
El Segundo high school athletic department.
On behalf of Herald Publications, have a
wonderful and safe Holiday Season. •
