Eagles from page 3
The Eagles played with passion and never
gave a thought to their being down by as many
as 29 points in the second half. The fact is El
Segundo’s determination and gutty performance
held the Wildcats to a mere 58 points when
they’ve been averaging 81 points per game.
Coach March said his team played well and
defensively, but we need to do a better job on
limiting second and third shots. Preston Engle
led the Eagles with 18 points, including all
eight points in the second quarter.
The Eagles travel to play Leuzinger next
Wednesday, December 15, at 6 p.m.
Tsukahira Leads Eagles to Win
The Eagles are on a three-game win streak
with their 61-31 win over San Pedro. Tina
Tsukahira led her team to the easy victory by
connecting on 9-16 from three-point range and
had a game-high 27 points. Head coach Terrence
Wilson was happy with his team’s overall play
and said, “Tina was really dialed in today.”
In the first quarter, Tsukahira connected
on back-to-back three-pointers as she helped
propel her team to an 18-8 lead. In the second
quarter, she did the same thing to put her team
up 28-10. At the end of the third quarter, she
made a 35-foot desperation buzzer-beating
three-pointer and added a couple more threepointers
in the fourth period.
Coach Wilson said the team has been playing
with more purpose and more unselfish on
offense. Besides Tsukahira’s 27 points, Leila
Sugimoto had 14 points, Bo Takehara chipped
in 10 points, and Nicole Ungaro had six points.
“We’re looking for the open player more and
taking better shot selections.” He continued,
“As well as Tina (Tsukahira) played, our
defensive efforts stood out too. There hasn’t
been a shortage of effort on defense, and it
has shown in the last three games.”
The Eagles played at Culver City Tuesday
night and play at Da-Vinci tonight at 6 p.m.
They won’t return home until Friday, January
7 at 6 p.m. to host Torrance in a Pioneer
League match-up.
Boys Soccer Not
Intimidated in Defeat
The Eagles last won a league a couple of
years ago. That team played was loaded with
experience and talent that included speed and
athletes. This season they are once again loaded
with talented athletes and perhaps even better
speed but doing it with underclassmen. Head
coach Andrew Kelly has instilled a winning
attitude and is not intimidated by a young team
with just six seniors.
The Eagle’s non-league schedule has been a
challenge with the likes of City Section power
San Pedro, Bay League powers Peninsula and
Palos Verdes, and reigning CIF champion Mira
Costa Mustangs. Facing Mira Costa’s big and
physical team could have made an impression
on the younger Eagles, but they weren’t
intimidated at all. Though the Mustangs won
the game 2-0, they knew they were in a battle.
The Mustangs pushed the Eagles throughout
the first half and controlled the pace. The
game was physical, and El Segundo was not
going to fold. El Segundo goalkeeper James
Baldino had five saves but was constantly
hounded with Mira Costa’s aggressive offense.
The first half’s only goal came on a penalty
kick by Dylan Engels. In the second half, the
Eagles had their opportunities but came away
empty. Midway through the half, the Mustangs
controlled the ball in front of El Segundo’s
net. After a scrum and three attempts, Luke
Donahue passed to Engels, who pushed it in
for a goal, and the Eagles fell 2-0.
El Segundo got back in the win column
with a 3-2 win over Animo. Juniors Ethan
Ralls and Gage Van Kleeck and sophomore
Connor Moore each scored a goal, and the
Eagles improved to 3-1, heading into this
week’s games against Culver City on Monday
and Palos Verdes yesterday.
Defending Champs
Off to Slow Start
Last season the girls’ soccer team was the
third-place team in the Pioneer League. They
went on to win the program’s first CIF championship.
With plenty of returning members off
last year’s squad, including Chelsea Charles,
the reigning Player of the Year, hopes for a
repeat are high. The Eagles started slowly last
season before hitting their stride. This season
has been no different, with the Eagles starting
1-3-1 heading into this week’s games against
Inglewood yesterday and at home against
Peninsula today at 3 p.m. They are entered
in the prestigious South Torrance Tournament
starting Saturday.
Water Polo Girls Win Big
The Eagles won a pair of games against Bay
League hopefuls Redondo 13-2 and Peninsula
14-6 and have jumped out to a 4-1 record.
Against Redondo, the Eagles took an early
4-0 lead when Stephanie Rodriguez stole a
pass and ended up with an easy score. Late
in the first period, Avery Torres was set up
by Emmie Ramirez’s pass and fired it in to
make it 7-0.
In the third period, Alyssa Mullane lobbed one
in to make it 9-0, and Sally Gonzalez scored
shortly after Redondo scored their first goal to
make it 10-1. Evelyn Hale scored off an assist
from Ramirez with six seconds remaining in the
period. Stephanie Rodriguez scored a pair of goals
in the fourth period to round out the scoring.
The defense was stout and held Redondo to
just ten shot attempts, and the freshman goalie
had eight saves in the first half.
The Eagles jumped out to a 5-2 lead against
Peninsula and took a 9-4 lead into the final
period. In the fourth period, El Segundo’s
offense took off and scored five more goals,
and went on to win 14-6.
The Eagles face Torrance today at 3 p.m.
Friday, they travel to play in the Diamond Bar
Tournament and face Beverly Hills on the road
on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. •
Bo Takehara connects on a long three-point attempt.

Project Location: The Project North Site is located on the south side of East Franklin Street, mid-block and east of 136 Oregon Street,
the building located at the southeast corner of Oregon and East Franklin Street. The Project South Site is located at the northwest corner
of Kansas Street and East El Segundo Boulevard. The projects sites are bound by the Chevron Refinery to the south across East El
Segundo Boulevard, and by light industrial and creative office space uses to the north, east, and west within the Smoky Hollow area.
Project Description: The proposed Specific Plan Amendment (SPA) would modify the Height Development Standards for Community
Benefit Plan (CBP) Tier II applicable projects in a designated 30-acre subarea of the Smoky Hollow Specific Plan (SHSP) with a max.
building height deviation up to 60 feet.
The proposed Project also involves the redevelopment of two adjacent sites within the SHSP, the South Site (aka Parcel A [EA No. 1281])
and the North Site (aka Parcel E [EA No. 1282]). On the 1.01-acre South Site the Project would develop a 44,604-square foot addition
to the existing 19,311 sf, one-story brick building that would be structurally preserved in place. This site would have a total building area
of 63,915 square feet (FAR = 1.45) and a new building height of 59’ 6”.
The proposed Project for the North Site would develop a 1.07-acre portion of a 4.34-acre property with two buildings, one R&D and office
building and a coffee pavilion building. The existing 19,493 square foot (sf), one-story brick building would be preserved and two new
floors with 44,802 square feet would be added above it. This would result in a total building area of 65,061 square feet (FAR = 0.95) and
a new building height of 59’ 6”. The new coffee pavilion will have 766 square feet with a maximum height of 23’ 8”. This site would also
include construction of a new 5,000-square foot public outdoor park with park seating, picnic tables, shade trees and landscaping.
