A Special Beetle Rug at The
Automobile Driving Museum
On Friday, Oct. 11 between 10:30 and 12,
a ceremony will take place at The Automobile
Driving Museum (ADM) at 610 Lairport in
El Segundo to celebrate the donation of a
beautiful, framed latch-hook rug, picturing
a VW Beetle. The creator is a young man
(Benjamin Simon) with special needs who
has a passion and talent for creating these
beautiful designs.
Once a week, the museum invites a
group of about nine young adults with
special needs (autism, intellectual disabilities
etc,) from the Carousel School
adult program to volunteer there and
shine bumpers, among other activities.
Benjamin has been a longtime patron of
the museum because of his love of classic
cars -- VW Bugs in particular. ADM has
always gone out of its way to honor that
love, making sure a Beetle is available for
rides when he has a birthday party there.
Through knowing Benjamin, the museum
now sponsors the volunteer program
for other young adults with special needs
in Carousel. For these young people, their
“work” at the museum is a highlight of
their week.
Benjamin is trying to develop a small
business in making these rugs. The museum
is a non-profit organization and Benjamin
is donating his latest rug to them because
he loves the place and because they love
him too!
The Carousel kids will be present at the
ceremony as will Benjamin’s friends and
family. Also present will be representatives
from FACT, an organization that helps
people with special needs develop vocations
that reflect their interests and talents.
FACT counselors have been extremely
helpful to Benjamin in developing and perfecting
his rug-making skills.

DUI and Driver’s License
Checkpoint Oct. 18
The El Segundo Police Department (ESPD
will be conducting a DUI and Driver’s License
Checkpoint on Oct. 18 at an undisclosed
location within the city limits between the
hours of 8 p.m. and 3 a.m.
DUI Checkpoints like this one are placed
in locations based on collision statistics
and frequency of DUI arrests. Officers will
be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug
impairment, with officers checking drivers
for proper licensing.
ESPD would like to remind drivers that
“DUI doesn’t just mean alcohol.” If you
take prescription drugs, particularly those
with a driving or operating machinery warning
on the label, you might be impaired
enough to be arrested for DUI. Marijuana can
also be impairing, especially in combination
with alcohol or other drugs, and can result
in a DUI.
ESPD offers these reminders to ensure
you have a safe night of fun that doesn’t
involve a DUI:
• Always use a designated sober driver
– a friend who is not drinking, ride-share,
cab or public transportation – to get home.
• See someone who is clearly impaired
try and drive? Take the keys and help
make other arrangements to find a sober
way home.
• Report drunk drivers -- Call 911.
• Hosting a party? Offer nonalcoholic
drinks. Monitor who are drinking and how
they are getting home.
Getting home safely is cheap, but a DUI
arrest is not! Drivers caught driving impaired
and charged with DUI can expect the financial
impact this arrest to be upwards of $13,500.
This includes fines, fees, DUI classes, license
suspension and other expenses, not to mention
possible jail time.

Los Angeles International Airport is kicking
a ground transportation tradition to the
curb later this month when it opens a new
taxi and ride-app pickup station that will be
a temporary solution to the ever-increasing
gridlock at the nation’s second-busiest airport.
Starting around Halloween, the familiar
yellow cabs and the popular ride-app companies
Uber and Lyft will be diverted to a
designated pickup zone next to Terminal 1,
at the east entrance to the airport. Passengers
can either take a short shuttle ride or walk
to the U-shaped passenger pickup hub.
Amenities include food trucks, covered
benches and quicker exits from the airport
onto Sepulveda Boulevard.
The traffic management change does not
affect non-commercial drivers who pick up
their family, friends or co-workers at LAX.
Also, the taxi and ride-app companies still
will be allowed to make drop-offs on Level
2. Things to know about the coming changes
and creation of the LAX-it pickup zone:
• Until Oct. 31, guests should continue
to pick up their taxis, Ubers, Lyfts, and
Opolis outside the terminals in the upper/
departures level.
• The pickup area is a three-minute walk
from Terminal 1 and eight minutes by foot
from Terminals 2, 7 and 8.
• Shuttles will arrive at terminals every three
to five minutes and the longest shuttle ride
is expected to take 15 minutes maximum. It
will be shorter from most terminals, however.
• Passengers currently can wait up to 15-20
minutes for their ride app pickup – if their
driver doesn’t get frustrated and cancel on
them. This new zone should improve that.
