Lt. Col Michael Scott Kerr USAF
Lt. Col Michael Scott Kerr
USAF (Retired) slipped the surly
bonds of earth and flew west
into the sunset. It was a peaceful
takeoff at 9 pm. on August 10,
2019. Mike was 81 and he was
a former resident and graduate
of ESHS before joining the US
Marine Corps in 1956. After
serving 3 + years, he was discharged
as a Sergeant and went
on to receive his Degree from San
Diego University. He then entered the US Air
Force in 1964 where he was commissioned.
He then started and later completed his pilot
training. His first assignment was to fly the
RF4C Phantom aircraft out of Udorn Airfield
in Thailand on reconnaissance missions. On
his 29th mission, January 16, 1967, his aircraft
was shot down by a surface to
air missile 35 miles north of
Hanoi Vietnam. He was then
captured and incarcerated in the
Hanoi Prison. He then started
his 2239 days (6+ years) of
suffering as a POW until his
release in March 1973. After his
release Mike was retained as a
pilot and remained in the USAF
until his retirement in 1992 after
completing over 32 years of
military service to his country.
Mike is survived by his wife Darlene, his
daughters Nadia and Tovah, his sister Terry
Hobson, and numerous relatives and their
families. Mike was a great patriot and will be
deeply missed by all. He will be put to rest
in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
