Air Force Announces Selection of
GPS III Follow-On Contract
The U.S. Air Force announced selection
of Lockheed Martin for a fixed-price-type
production contract for 22 Global Positioning
System III Follow-On (GPS IIIF) satellites
with a total estimated contract value up to
$7.2 billion. “The world is dependent on
GPS, from getting directions to getting cash
from an ATM machine or trading on the stock
exchange,” said Secretary of the Air Force
Heather Wilson. “These satellites will provide
greater accuracy, and improved anti-jamming
capabilities making them more resilient.”
Today, the Air Force operates a total of
77 satellites vital to national security that
provide communications, command and
control, missile warning, nuclear detonation
detection, weather, and GPS for the world.
The Air Force’s acquisition strategy for
this solicitation achieved a balance between
mission success, meeting operational needs,
opportunities for technology insertion, lowering
costs, and introducing competition for
National Security Space missions.
Since the Department of Defense delegated
decision authorities on this program to the
Air Force, the service saved five months by
eliminating an additional layer of reviews
and speeding up the source selection process.
Additionally, by using a fixed-price contract,
the contractor, not the taxpayer would be
responsible for any cost overruns.
The first GPS IIIF satellite is expected
to be available for launch in 2026. The Air
Force is the lead agency for procuring these
satellites.
The Air Force Space Command’s Space
and Missile Systems Center, located at Los
Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo is
the U.S. Air Force’s center of excellence
for acquiring and developing military space
systems. Its portfolio includes the Global
Positioning System, military satellite communications,
defense meteorological satellites,
space launch, range systems, satellite control
networks, space-based infrared systems, and
space situational awareness capabilities.

West Basin Water Harvest Block
Party Brings Community Together
West Basin Municipal Water District will
host its 20thannual Water Harvest festival
on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
outside of its Edward C. Little Water Recycling
Facility (ECLWRF) in El Segundo. The
free, family-oriented event will be a block
party this year featuring educational booths,
games, giveaways and water-related activities.
The event will take place on South
Hughes Way, outside of the ECLWRF, to
become a community block party. Typically,
the District hosts the event at its water recycling
facility but changed the venue to the
street due to renovations underway at the
facility’s visitor and education center. Free
parking and shuttle service to the event will
be available once again this year at 1960
E. Grand Ave. (at Pacific Coast Highway,
formerly Sepulveda Boulevard).
Water Harvest is designed to entertain children,
adults and families alike with fun water
education activities, food, games, stage shows,
kids costume contest, giveaways and more. Each
year, thousands of community members bring their
families to Water Harvest to learn about water
conservation, water use efficiency and environmental
stewardship in their everyday lives.
The District will also recognize five local
organizations and individuals who have
showcased their commitment to local water
issues during its “Water Reliability” awards
ceremony, which will commence on the main
event stage at 11 a.m.
For additional information about Water
Harvest, parking directions, and a schedule
of events, please visit www.westbasin.org/
