Oulashian Settles in as Assistant
Principal at Richmond School
By Duane Plank
El Segundo resident Carie Oulashian is barely
a week into her new gig as the assistant principal
at Richmond Street Elementary School (RSS),
and she seems to be settling in quite well. “I
have loved every minute of RSS so far,” she
said. “I am constantly amazed by the level of
expertise, collaboration and commitment of the
teachers and staff. It is a well-oiled machine
over here, and best-practice is the norm.”
RSS Principal Dr. Alice Lee began officially
collaborating with the new assistant principal
after Oulashian’s selection garnered approval
from the El Segundo School Board at the June
25 meeting. The prior assistant principal, Dr.
Rebecca Godbey, left RSS to take an elementary
school principal post in the Compton Unified
School District.
Lee is confident that Oulashian will thrive
in her new role. I am so glad to be working
alongside Carie,” Lee said. “She brings with
her over 20 years of experience to our school --
with expertise in instructional design, strategies,
and intervention systems to support students. I
look forward to leading Richmond Street with
Mrs. Oulashian!”
Oualshian most recently worked for the
neighboring Wiseburn Unified School District
(WUSD) and will, according to WUSD
Superintendent Dr. Blake Silvers, be greatly
missed. “A huge loss to us,” Silvers said. “It
is a gain for El Segundo.”
Oualishian received her Bachelor’s degree in
psychology from UC Santa Barbara, and her
Master of Arts in special education from Cal
State University, Dominguez Hills. She was a
classroom teacher at Lennox Middle School
from 1997 to 2005 and has also worked as
a part-time faculty member and fieldwork
instructor at Loyola Marymount University.

Superintendent Dr. Melissa Moore said
Oulashian was the top choice from a field of
top-notch educators. While this will be Oulashian’s
first administrative position, she has
expertise in helping students who need “extra”
support, and in the field of special education.
Last school year, Oulashian worked for
Wiseburn as a “Multi-Tiered System Specialist”
(MTSS) tasked to initiate systems that
“support all students.” This included students
who may be challenged in certain subjects,
high achievers who seem to have mastered
their school tasks, and all the students who fall
in between the learning spectrum. Oulashian
said she also supported the teachers, who are

Wiseburn Board Hears a STEM
Update, Approves Promotions
By Duane Plank
Last Thursday evening, the members of the
Wiseburn School Board witnessed a presentation
from R.H. Dana Middle School tech guru
Andy de Seriere regarding the strides made
with the STEM program. They also awarded
a promotion to long-time Wiseburn Unified
School District employee Wendy Tsubaki.
De Seriere started his presentation noting
“that we are at the epicenter of [technological]
innovation” and mentioning the District’s
proximity to Northrop Grumman and SpaceX.
“Crazy innovators,’ he called them, “but they
are getting things done. It is essential that
we provide opportunities for our students to
work with engineers so that the kids can see
that pathway and go right into those jobs…
It is an exciting time to live and work in the
Wiseburn [Unified] School District.”
Student presenters Maya Walker and Winston
Bird shared their thoughts about their
participation in a recent tech event, dubbed
Future U, that was sponsored and hosted by

The El Segundo High School football team’s
arduous schedule to start the season hit a
low point when the Mira Costa Mustangs
ran up a 45-0 first half score on the way to
a 52-7 win over the Eagles. The 45 points
the Eagles gave up in the first half were the
most surrendered by a Steve Shevlin coached
team in his 26 years at the helm. It, however,
wasn’t the most points given up by the Eagles
in one half. That distinction goes to the
1967-68 Eagles team when they fell to West
Torrance 72-14.
Before the crowd was settled in, Mira Costa
was already on its way to a rout. On its first
possession and first play, junior quarterback
Sam Whitney completed a 44-yard touchdown
pass to Kayle Marsh. After a quick three and
out by El Segundo, the Mustangs didn’t waste
