City Hockey Rink Gets a Redo
A renovation of the city’s roller hockey rink
at Rec Park has been completed. Thanks in
part to a partnership with the Los Angeles
Kings, the rink went through a complete
makeover and much-needed repairs. Last
week the ribbon cutting for the revitalized
rink took place with dignitaries from the city,
and King’s president Luc Robitaille, team
analyst, and former player Daryl Evans and
Bailey, the mascot, were on hand.
Renovations included the boards being
replaced, including the dasher (yellow)
boards at the bottom. The rink surface was
covered with a type of all sport surface for
long-term durability. The new surface flattens
out and covers many of the cracks and
uneven areas that had occurred over time.
There was a slight grinding of the cement
down and away from the rink at the south
end to hopefully alleviate the water issues.
In addition, LA Kings logos were placead on
the rink, boards, and a wrap on the benches. •

Standout Films From
This Year’s Fantasia Fest
By Morgan Rojas for Cinemacy
For those who don’t know, Fantasia Fest
is a Montreal-based film festival that pays
special attention to highlighting Asian and
Anime films from around the world. Since
starting out in 1996, they’ve also long held
the reputation of being “the most outstanding
and largest genre film festival in North
America,” with past premieres including
Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds,
Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead, and
the iconic horror film Final Destination 5.
Cinemacy was able to attend the multi-week
festival virtually this year, and while we saw
a number of great films, we consider these
to be the standouts of the fest.

By Kristen Morell, Librarian
This beautifully written and illustrated
picture book tells the story of Miguel, a
young boy who learns that he is moving
to the U.S. mainland, leaving everyone he
knows and loves in Puerto Rico behind.
Miguel is especially sad about leaving his
pet frog, Coquí, that he takes everywhere
behind. Miguel wonders about whether he
will be able to find a panadería that sells the
questios he loves to eat in New York and
whether there will be baseball.
When Miguel and his mom arrive to New
York and begin to feel homesick, they go into
the City and explore all the new sights and
sounds. While some of the things he used
to do in Puerto Rico can’t be recreated in
