the deficit to 28-21. On their next possession,
Bucher picked up 43 rushing yards on four
carries during their six-play drive. On the
first play of the fourth quarter, Menendez
followed the block of Nathan Ibarra and
Gabe Blanco to sneak into the end zone to
tie the game at 28-28.
With the offense rolling, it was time for
the defense to flex their muscles. They forced
consecutive fumbles, and each turnover was
converted into touchdowns. The first was
after a punishing tackle that was recovered at
the Knights’ 16-yard line. On the first play,
Mason Kahn took the handoff and outran
the defense on his way to the end zone to
give his team a 35-28 lead. On the ensuing
kickoff, David McPherson delivered a blow
that caused the Knights’ Jayden Thomas to
cough up the ball. The Eagles recovered the
ball at the Bishop Montgomery 27-yard line.
Six plays later, Menendez found a wide-open
Bucher out of the backfield for a 12-yard
touchdown pass. The Eagle’s final score came
on a 26-yard pass play from Menendez to
Nate Pascarelli with 4:12 left in the game.
It was a historical win giving head coach
Shawn Green his first coaching win. The
team recognized the momentous victory by
dousing Coach Green with a Gatorade shower
shortly after the game. Coach Green seized
the moment with his team and then reflected
on what the first victory meant. “To think
I was playing for this team when I was in
high school and now to be the head coach
getting my first win. It’s an emotional one.”
El Segundo (1-0) travels to Westchester
(0-1) tonight to take on the Comets at 7 p.m.
The Eagles will have their home opener next
Friday night, September 10, at 7 p.m. when
they host Don Lugo.
Cross Country Teams
Have a Look of Experience
The El Segundo high school’s cross country
teams will be as strong as ever, with
each team bolstering plenty of experience.
The runners have been preparing for what
hopes to be another banner season by training
at the Big Bear camp, where the team
ran daily, between six and thirteen miles.
According to head coach Marcos Bolanos,
it was a successful experience that brought
the team together for a great bonding time
together. “This bonding experience couldn’t
have been possible without the support of the
school administration, the District, and the
School Board for supporting and allowing it
to happen. It is the highlight for many of our
athletes, and it should translate into another
successful season.”
The boys’ team returns five of their top
seven runners from the 2020 shortened season.
They put together a strong track season
in the spring, and that led to a phenomenal
summer. Led by senior captain Ryu Iguchi,
the Eagles look to make a run at another trip
to their goal, a spot at the CIF State meet.
“Our top five looks to be Ryu Iguchi, Luca
Romero (11th), Daniel Pop (12th), Nasai
Rivas (12th), and Luke Harrell (11th),” said
Coach Bolanos. All five two-mile times from
track that has led Coach Bolanos to believe
they can each crack the sub-16-minute range
for a three-mile course.
The Eagles look to get after it at the largest
high school cross country race in the
nation, the Woodbridge Invitational, held
on September 17. The Dana Hills Nike
Invitational follows the next weekend. The
team’s goal is to be recognized in the top 10
of CIF and finish with a strong showing at
the CIF State meet in late November. They
have the depth to do it and are showing the
daily work ethic to make it happen. Other
key contributors this season will be Jasper
Jahn (12th), Jackson Chartier (11th), Mo
Imtiaaz (11th), and Ben Guzman (12th).
“We have a depth to the squad and a bond
to push each other to be our very best each
day in practice,” said Bolanos.
The girls are returning three of their top
five runners from the 2019 CIF State team.
Led by seniors Tyler Matlosz, Ami Jacobson,
and Erin Rifkin, they have a strong core of
returning leaders. All three were scoring
runners for that state team that set a school
record. During the track season, they added
a standout freshman, Iliana Montenegro. She
has blended in perfectly with the team and
impresses daily with her stellar workouts.
These four girls have put in a tremendous
summer and are ready to make it five consecutive
appearances at the CIF State meet.
Coach Bolanos is optimistic about the
balance of the roster. “We have some great
promising prospects who we think will help
us as scorers.” He’s referring to Alicia Alvarez
(12th), who is a varsity returner from
the 2020 team and has come back from
an injury in an impressive fashion. Angela
Shoenbaum and Makaela Fujimoto also return
this season; they were part of the 2019
state team. Kate Elward (10th), Ashlyn Sze
(10th), and Sunny Gales (9th) look like they
can make a big jump this year to help the
Eagles in key spots.
The girls’ team is eager to return to championship
form. They could be recognized in
the top 10 CIF and state polls. “I think this
team has a top four that might rival some of
our fantastic groups from the past five years.
I am excited to see what they can do when
the season starts,” said Bolanos. •
David McPherson sacks Bishop Montgomery’s Diego Rodriquez.
Mason Kahn is wrapped up by Dominic Sellan but not before picking up a first down.
Kyle DeChristopher brings down Bishop Montgomery’s Jacob Sekiyoba for short gain.
