El Segundo All-Stars
Going on the Road
By Gregg McMullin
It will be quiet around El Segundo with
all of the families of the Babe Ruth League
All-Star baseball players traveling to Pacific
Southwest Regional Tournaments. The 13,
14, and 15 years old all-star teams each won
their respective state tournaments to advance
to Pacific Southwest Regional tournaments
in Bakersfield (13-15s), Price, Utah (14s),
and Fallon, Nevada (13s). The American

Legion team fell in their district tournament
or they would have been playing in the state
American Legion tournament in Fresno. The
8-10-year-old Little League all-stars started
play in the Section 4 Tournament and look
like a formidable team. Should they complete
the sweep, they’ll head south of San Diego
to Imperial Beach for the Southern California
Little League All-Star Tournament that starts
on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Babe Ruth All-Stars win
Southern California State
Tournament
With their 6-3 win over Westchester, the
El Segundo Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars
swept through the state tournament. It means
for the first time in league history all three
all-star teams will be headed to the Pacific
Southwest Regional Tournament in the same
year. It is a rare fete for sure, especially
nationally.
El Segundo was trailing 2-0 in the fourth
inning when they came up with a three-run
rally. Ethan Ayler was hit by a pitch, and
Gavin McKinnon reached on an error, and
both wound up scoring. Dylan Garcia’s RBI
double gave his team a 3-2 lead. In the
sixth inning, Mateo Heredia drew a walk
followed by a single by McKinnon. Shane
Huber’s RBI double made it 4-2, and Kyle
Whalen’s two-run double gave El Segundo a
6-2 advantage. Westchester would score one
run in the seventh inning before Ayler struck
out two in a row to end the game.
The win sends El Segundo to the Pacific
Southwest Regional Tournament in Price,
Utah starting Monday. They’ll need to have
the same type of batting averages like they
did in the State Tournament from RJ Puffer
(.667), Mateo Heredia (.444), Ethan Ayler
(.375), and Shane Huber (.333) when they
face a team from Hawaii (Oahu) in their
opening game that starts at 11 a.m.
The 15-year-old all-stars open up with
