Herrera, Natacha Lee, Makana Burns, Trinity
Parascandola, Annika Nelson, Dalia Ramirez,
Katie Callahan, and Savannah Schartz. Together
they helped transform the program into another
successful season.
Before the CIF Southern Section playoffs
start, the Eagles fell to Culver City in a tight
3-2 loss in their final tune-up. Chelsie Charles
gave her team a 1-0 lead with a score off an
assist from Annika Klishnevich. The Centaurs
would tie the game with a goal that got by
Eagle goaltender Nili Kovacs. The Eagles
retook the lead later in the first quarter when
Klishnevich found a rebound off an attempt
to make it 2-1. In the second half, the play
on both ends became aggressive. El Segundo’s
defense fought off the Centaurs’ relentless offensive
attack. Annika Nelson’s header certainly
saved a sure goal attempt by Culver City’s Tia
Lucas. Lucas would find the net later on with
a soaring shot attempt over the outstretched
arms of Kovacs to tie the game at 2-2. The
Centaurs would win the game on a corner kick
that was headed in late in the game.
The Eagles traveled to Granite Hills in Apple
Valley yesterday to open the CIF Southern
Section Division 4 playoffs. Should the Eagles
win, they would advance to play Friday at
home at 3 p.m.
Baseball Team Unloads
on Torrance in Split
The Eagles split a pair of games against
Torrance and are 1-3 in the Pioneer League
going into this week’s showdown against West
Torrance. It was a split that could have easily
been a sweep for the Eagles.
In the first game, the Eagles fell 2-1 in the
game. They hit into five double plays and out
hit the Tartars 8-5. Jake Stolnack pitched well
enough to win, giving up two earned runs on
five hits, one walk, and struck out four. The
Eagles had a chance to tie the game in the
seventh when Rafael Smith walked and got
to second base on an error. With two outs,
Cooper Stolnack singled, and Smith tried to
score but was thrown out at the plate on a
close call.
In the second game, the Eagles unloaded
their offensive power by hitting four home
runs and easily won 8-1. The first time an
Eagle squad had hit four or more home runs
in a game since the 1999 team, which did it
multiple times.
Kenny Chung, who hit two home runs, hit
a solo shot in the second inning, and Dylan
Immel hit a mammoth solo home run in the
third inning. In the fifth inning, Julian Rodriquez
hit a solo home run to centerfield,
giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead. In the sixth inning,
El Segundo scored four runs, highlighted
by Chung’s three-run home run to extend the
lead to 8-1. Chung, who was 2-for-3 with four
RBIs, also pitched. He gave up five hits and
struck out eight in six innings.
The Eagles are on the road today at West
Torrance and on Saturday at Palos Verdes at
11 a.m. They return home next Thursday at
3:15 p.m. to host South Torrance. •
will play basketball, and Gideon Telahun (Cal
Poly SLO) will study Industrial Engineering.
The Eagles raced to a 17-4 lead highlighted
by Preston Engel’s steal for a layup in the
first quarter against Lawndale. Hardy-Taylor
was nearly perfect from the free-throw line
making 11 of 12 attempts and finished with a
game high17 points, and Engel had 12 points.
Dani Awada gave his team a 48-27 lead with
his jumper with four minutes remaining. El
Segundo’s defense held the Cardinals scoreless
the rest of the way, and the Eagles cruised to
the win. They improved to 5-0 in the Pioneer
League with a 48-36 road win over North
Torrance two nights later.
The Eagles faced Torrance this past Monday,
hosted Torrance last night, and host West Torrance
on Friday night at 6 p.m. They wrap up
their regular season next week with a home
game on Tuesday against South Torrance at
6 p.m. and on the road at Lawndale next
Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Lady Eagles Honor
Their Seniors with Win
Four seniors were honored with their parents
before the game against Lawndale. Jocelyn
Paez (El Camino CC) will study Emergency
Technical Services, Kristen Tsubaki (El Camino
CC) will further her education and studying
Psychology. Story Noble (Santa Monica CC)
intends to pursue International Business.
Jordan Peterson will take her 4.8 GPA to (Smith
College in Massachusetts) where she is slated
to play basketball for the Pioneers.
If the Eagles are to advance to the CIF
Southern Section post-season playoffs, they’ll
need to put together a winning streak to end
the season. They defeated Lawndale 48-27 that
kept them in contention. Both teams struggled
early on with their shooting, and El Segundo
found itself down by three points heading into
the second quarter. Kristen Tsubaki’s runner
tied the game midway through the quarter.
The Eagles outscored the Cardinals 9-2 in the
second quarter in a game dominated by defense.
El Segundo’s shooting improved in the
second half, especially with the three-point
shooting of Jordan Petersen. Story Noble and
Leila Sugimoto helped their team stretch a
tight game into a 33-21 lead. Bo Takehara hit
a long-range jumper in the fourth quarter, and
the Eagles went on to an impressive 48-27 win.
The Eagles host West Torrance on Friday
at 7:30 p.m. and wind up their regular season
next week at home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Girls Lacrosse Keeps Rolling
The Eagles have been on a roll and with their
15-3 win over Downey they improved to 10-2
on the year. They’ve managed to put together
a six game win streak going into this week’s
games against Culver City on Tuesday and a
scheduled home game against Beverly Hills
today. They wrap their season next Tuesday
at 3:00 p.m. Syd Moeller and Maya Jaeger
led their team by scoring four goals apiece.
Grace Bonny scored three goals and inspired
her team with great defense.
Eagles Earn Emotional
Soccer Win for Duke Durand
It was a grim scene as Duke Durand lie
sprawling on the field in apparent excruciating
pain as trainers, coaches, and staff attended to
the three-year starter. He had collided with a
South Torrance player and may have broken
his tibia in the process, essentially ending his
brilliant high school soccer career. The Eagles
responded with a hard-fought 2-1 win.
After play was restored, the Eagles played
with just a little more passion for their popular
teammate. Midway through the first half,
Ty Kerns fed sophomore forward Constanin
Papadopoulos with a perfect lead, and Papadopoulos
powered the pass into the net for a
1-0 lead. A minute into the second half, South
Torrance took advantage of a mistaken open net
to tie the game at 1-1. With about ten minutes
remaining, Papadopoulos found himself in the
right place, in front of the net, and powered a
rebound around the Spartan goalie for a 2-1
advantage. The Eagles held onto the lead and
came away with a key win.
In the season finale, Lawndale’s first-half
goal stood up in the Cardinal’s 1-0 win over
the Eagles. It dropped El Segundo to 7-6-1
in the Pioneer League and just missed a CIF
playoff berth.
Eagles Honor their Soccer Seniors
and Headed to CIF Playoffs
Prior to their game against Culver City, the
Eagles celebrated their seniors, including Marisa
Grace Bonny scored twice and had five assists against Downey
The girls’ lacrosse program honored their four seniors after their 15-3 win over Downey
Jordan Peterson connects from three-point range as Lawndale’s
Kimiko Kennedy can only look on.
