Aren’t El Segundo Little League
Doubleheaders a Lot of Fun?
Story and Photos by Gregg McMullin
The El Segundo Little League started playing
doubleheaders at the Major Division level
years ago. It was a way to incorporate some
fun and memorable times coupled with solving
the age-old scheduling problem. Over the
years, it has developed into an event for teams
and a day the players embrace because of the
snacks between games.
Over the years, it seems that some teams try
and outdo their opponents with their betweengame
snacks. It has morphed into more of a
smorgasbord of food fit for a Major League
clubhouse. You can usually tell the Saturday
that teams are playing their doubleheaders with
the E-Z Ups in place and the tables filled with
a plethora of items to choose from. Remember
these are 10-12-year-olds, so expect to find
plenty of sandwiches, pizza, mac and cheese,
wings, chips, homemade cookies, brownies,
cake, pie and plenty of water, juice and soda.
Usually the teams comingle under each E-Z
Up and get their fill of snacks before their
second game.
On this particular Saturday, the Royals and
Athletics played their doubleheader with the first
game starting at 11 a.m. and the second game
at 2 p.m. In the opener, the Royals got off to
a great start by scoring seven first inning runs
on their way to a 12-2 win. Dominik Kopecky
led the Royals’ hitting attack by going 2-for-2
with three RBIs, while Hudson Winterrowc had
two hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Carson
Brooks and Chasen Lafolette combined on a
two-hitter and gave up just one earned run.
Between games the teams shared some fun
food, smiles and stories before their second
game. It’s fun watching who might have filled
up too much on lunch and then seeing how
they played their second game.
Apparently the between-game munchies meal
agreed with the Athletics in game two and they
won 9-3. They pounded out 11 hits and eight
of the 10 players had at least one hit. The
Athletics’ Mason Christian singled and later
scored his team’s first inning run to make it
1-0. In the third inning, Timmy Klug doubled
and scored on Nickolas Kvitek’s seventh home
run of the season to make it 3-0.
In the fourth inning, the Royals scored two
runs on Kopecky’s two-run single to cut their
deficit to 3-2. The Athletics’ Reed Abrams,
who came in as a relief pitcher, struck out the
next two batters to shorten the Royals’ rally. In
the bottom half of the fourth inning, Abrams
was aboard on an error. He later scored on
an overthrow. Ryan Pilkvist’s two-run double
made it 7-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Jonathan
Earley hit a double just inside the first base

Thank You Sponsors,
Participants and the
Community for making the
27th Annual PTA Run for
Education a Success!
With over 1600 registered to run the 10K, 5K and Kids Fun Runs, the PTA Run for
Education took place on a beautiful Saturday morning on April 21st on Main Street. The
El Segundo PTA Run for Education began in 1992 with approximately 600 participants.
We see nearly three generations participating in what has become a treasured El Segundo
tradition. The proceeds from the Run provide funds such as art and science supplies,
field trips, assemblies and more to the El Segundo Public Schools.
Trophies were awarded to Daniel Diaz Mateo, a 25-year-old young man from Buenos
Aires, Argentina who set a new Men’s 10K course record and ran a time of 34:36. Daniel
currently works at Google in Argentina, traveled to Google Los Angeles for business, and
read about the El Segundo Run for Education. Daniel loved the fact that the proceeds
help fund the El Segundo public school system and decided to run. A professional athlete
in training, Daniel stated the course was pretty tough with a lot of hills, but the energy
and cheering of the people kept him going. Daniel thanks all the support and cheering
of the community and commented on the great organization of this event.
Richmond Street Teacher and CrossFit phenomenon Val Voboril was the Female 10K
winner with a time of 46:19. Philip Gonzalez from Arcadia was the Male 5K winner
with a time of 16:32 and El Segundo native and triathlete, Amy Reaser 2010 ESHS
Graduate, was the Female 5K winner with a time 21:38. Amy was also the first women
finisher in 2016. Amy will start her doctorate in Occupational Therapy this summer at
a medical school in Phoenix and her sister Allison Reaser hopes to make the US World
Team in USA Track and Field. ESHS alumni Austin Van Biezen and Ethan Liang
placed in the Top 10 finishers for the 10K and current ESHS students Arend Verfaillie
and sister, Aiyana Verfaillie placed in the Top 10 finishers for the 5K. All participants
received T-Shirts and Medals. Medals not claimed at the awards ceremony are available
for pickup at El Segundo Athletic Club, 505 Main St. El Segundo, CA 90245 until
Friday, May 11, 9PM.
