Letters from page 3
Irresponsible Campaign
Shannon Crouch urges parents to ask parents
of their children’s friends the same questions
a criminal would ask to determine where and
how to steal firearms. Most responsible firearm
owners don’t publicize whether they own
firearms and where and how they are stored.
The real purpose of this irresponsible anti-gun
political campaign is to create unreasonable
fear of firearms and their owners, ostracize
firearm owners and their children, and divide
our community.
About half of American homes possess firearms.
Yet 2016 data from the National Safety
Council, a real safety organization founded
more than 100 years ago, shows there are many
more deaths from each of the following causes
than from firearm accidents: falls (69.8 times
more likely), pedestrian accidents (14.8 times),
drowning (7.6), fire or smoke (5.5), choking
on food (2.6), and bicycle accidents (2.1).
So why not ask: Will my child cross a
busy street to walk to your home? Do you
lock up your pool, matches, lighters, food,
and bicycles? Does anyone in your home
use drugs or alcohol? Most violent crime is
drug- or alcohol-related.
The NRA’s Eddie Eagle program teaches
children real gun safety that works everywhere,
unlike Crouch’s anti-gun fake “safety” campaign:
If you see a gun, (1) Do not touch;
(2) Leave the area; (3) Tell an adult.
Also, children are more likely to die from
lightning than a school shooting. It’s child
abuse to scare children into being afraid
of dying in a school shooting for anti-gun
political campaign purposes.
